THE TALENT SHOW AT WALKER ART CENTER

THE TALENT SHOW AT WALKER ART CENTER
April 7, 2010 Walker Art Center Chris Burden Wiretap (1977) Close Radio (KPFK-FM), Los Angeles, CA; January 17, 1977 Relic: Telephone, tape recorder, audiotape Courtesy the artist The Talent Show April 10 – August 15, 2010 Walker Art Center 1750 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55403 http://www.walkerart.org In recent years, television's reality shows and talent competitions have offered people a conflicted chance at fame, while various kinds of Web-based social media have pioneered new forms of communication that people increasingly use to perform their private lives as public theater. During the same period, governments worldwide have asserted vast new powers of surveillance, placing unwitting "participants" on an entirely different kind of stage. Against this backdrop, The Talent Show, organized by Walker curator Peter Eleey, examines a range of relationships between artists, audiences, and participants that model the competing desires for notoriety and privacy marking our present moment. For almost half a century, artists have dramatized these aspirations and the complex dynamics that surround them, whether by performing themselves or by soliciting the collaboration of others, with and without their knowledge. That distinction between willing and unwitting participants is highlighted in photographs documenting a landmark 1968 action by Graciela Carnevale, in which the artist quietly left her own exhibition opening and locked visitors inside the gallery. Challenging ethical questions are raised in various works, while others animate the combination of anonymity, desire and exhibitionism that undergirds today's virtual social networks. Several pieces offer a stage to visitors, including David Lamelas' Limit of a Projection I (1967), a simple theatrical spotlight illuminating a darkened gallery, which serves as an implicit and alluring invitation. Peter Campus' Shadow Projection (1974) coerces visitors into the televisual realm, as they step into a spotlight, face a camera, and witness a sort of auto-eclipse of themselves. Through a simple construction, visitors' spectacularized image on camera becomes visible only in the shadow of their real selves. Expanding upon the questions begged by Campus' installation, Hannah Wilke's final work explores the space between our private lives and what we show to the world. Wilke, who died of lymphoma in 1993, recorded her life during its last two-and-a-half disease-ridden years, compiling more than 30 hours of tape that were assembled posthumously into a 16-channel installation. Partly anticipating the world of reality television to follow, Wilke's moving work urgently asks us to consider why, and under what circumstances, we place or find ourselves on view. The exhibition will include work by Stanley Brouwn, Chris Burden, Sophie Calle, Peter Campus, Graciela Carnevale, Phil Collins, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Tehching Hsieh, David Lamelas, Piero Manzoni, Adrian Piper, Amie Siegel, John Smith, Andy Warhol, Gillian Wearing, Hannah Wilke, Shizuka Yokomizo, and Carey Young. The Talent Show is organized by the Walker Art Center. The exhibition is made possible by generous support from the David Teiger Foundation and Ann M. Hatch. Walker Art Center programming is made possible by its Premier Partners: General Mills, Target, and Star Tribune.

VODAFONE TO BRING THE BENEFITS OF THE INTERNET TO MANY MORE PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING MARKETS

7 April 2010

VODAFONE TO BRING THE BENEFITS OF THE INTERNET TO MANY MORE PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING MARKETS

  • Helping bridge the digital divide through combination of new technology, affordable handsets and low cost tariffs

  • Bringing a mobile applications experience to millions of customers combined with fast internet browsing of the full internet

  • Hugely beneficial for the millions of customers in emerging markets who do not have any other means of regular access to the internet.

Vodafone is seeking to bring the benefits of the internet to more people in developing markets through the launch of a customised version of the Opera Mini browser designed to run on low-cost handsets on 2G networks.

The move aims to enable as many people as possible to experience the internet for the first time, and to enjoy the social advantages it can bring through the spread of email and commerce-based applications.

Vodafone has worked alongside Opera Software to develop an enhanced version of Opera Mini 5 which is able to give a good internet experience on lower- to mid-tier handsets connected to second generation networks.

Since the Opera Mini 5 browser can compress data by up to 90 percent, it requires less processing power on the handset and uses less network capacity, resulting in a richer internet experience in more challenging conditions.

The Opera Mini 5 browser has been embedded in a range of 20 devices as well as being downloadable to over 250 GPRS supported handsets in Vodafone's customer base.

The move is backed by a string of highly affordable data tariffs designed to give worry-free browsing, with the aim of making a day's data usage as affordable as possible.

Vodafone is also creating an on-screen browsing experience that is designed to help someone who may have little experience of the internet. The on-screen experience will feature step-by-step, simple instructions in local languages, with a strong emphasis on the use of intuitive icons to help those with lower levels of literacy.

A range of Vodafone applications is also in development, most of them designed to deliver the most social benefits to users such as email, finding a job, buying and selling services and products, learning foreign languages, as well as getting access to global applications.

The initiative is initially being rolled out in India, South Africa, Turkey, Tanzania and Egypt with other markets expected to follow in the near future.

"With this product, we can transform even basic handsets into very capable internet browsing devices, enabling millions of people to enjoy the social and economic aspects of the internet that many already take for granted," said Jonathan Bill, Vodafone Internet Services Head of Emerging Markets. "By significantly enhancing the customer's internet experience, this initiative will help to boost local economies by encouraging entrepreneurs to create a range of locally-inspired business models and services."

"Opera is all about bringing the best internet experience to anyone, anywhere." said Lars Boilesen, CEO Opera Software. "The internet is the great leveller, and working with Vodafone gives us the opportunity to help bridge the digital divide for millions more worldwide."

Mobile technology is ideally suited to bringing internet connectivity to developing markets as it is easier to roll out than fixed technology in areas that are hard to reach.

The move is the latest of a string of initiatives launched by Vodafone in order to encourage the wider use of digital communications in developing markets to boost productivity and encourage economic growth.

On 15 February 2010, Vodafone announced the launch of the world's cheapest voice and text handset: the Vodafone 150, which retails at under $15 USD.  The handset, along with the $20 Vodafone 250 handset, will be available in the first instance in India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkey, Mozambique, Qatar, South Africa and Tanzania.

Vodafone also recently announced proposals to launch the M-Pesa money transfer service in South Africa. With approximately 26 million people in South Africa without official bank accounts, M-Pesa will enable millions of mobile phone subscribers to send and receive money via their mobile phones.

At the same time Vodafone has developed a range of solar powered and wind technology driven base stations designed to bring networks into rural areas which may not have their own power supplies.

Vodafone actively supports the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals aimed at meeting the needs of the world's poorest communities.  With this in mind these initiatives are helping to bridge the digital divide with the world's developing markets and are designed to bring societal and economic benefits to large communities of people.

Botox Wars: NYC New Product Wrestles Botox in the Big Apple

BOTOX WARS:NYC
NEW PRODUCT WRESTLES BOTOX IN THE BIG APPLE

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York, NY April 2010: While Botox has long been the only available means of banishing facial wrinkles, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, a prominent cosmetic plastic surgeon in Manhattan, recently introduced into his practice a new, state-of-the-art technique called Dysport.  Dysport, which has been used around the world for nearly twenty years, may be better than Botox for two important reasons:  it shows results faster and it provides a more natural-looking appearance.

"Over time, the tightening of the muscles between the eyebrows causeswrinkles called glabellar lines," Dr. Greenberg explains. "Just one injection of Dysport blocks the nerve signal that makes these muscles contract, resulting in a dramatic improvement in frown lines.  Positive results are generally seen within a day or two of treatment, days earlier than with Botox.  And unlike Botox, Dysport may allow for natural facial expressions."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Dysport in April 2009, but it has just launched in New York City.  It has been used in other countries, including the United Kingdom, since 1991.  As of October 2009, it has been in use in 36 countries.

Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., a nationally-renowned cosmetic plastic surgeon based in Manhattan and Woodbury, Long Island, New York, is well-known as a cosmetic plastic surgery expert and is frequently interviewed by the media. He has appeared on CBS, Fox News, NBC and News12 Long Island. He has also appeared in national magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, More, and Elle, as well as in The New York Times and Newsday. Dr. Greenberg hosts the New York Cosmetic Surgery Radio Show every Saturday evening on 98.5 FM (KJOY) and is often a featured speaker for women's groups, spas, and health and skin care institutes.

About Dr. Greenberg : He received his college and medical degrees with highest distinction from George Washington University, then completed his surgical training at the prestigious New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center. He received further training in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Greenberg is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Nassau County Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
