con preghiera di divulgazione: Come produrre il proprio disco d'esordio nel 2013

Intervista al produttore, autore televisivo e direttore artistico Roberto Manfredi.


Roberto Manfredi, un professionista che opera da molti anni nel mondo dello spettacolo, spaziando tra musica, teatro e televisione. Ritiene che oggi sia più difficile produrre un artista emergente? o i nuovi mezzi di comunicazione e i numerosi format televisivi aiutano quest'attività?


Produrre un artista emergente nel mercato discografico attuale è un'impresa assai difficile e complessa. E' indubbio che nell'ultimo ventennio la discografia mondiale, non solo italiana, è stata investita da un vero e proprio Tsunami. E' cambiata radicalmente la stessa fruizione dell'ascolto dei supporti audio musicali. Il disco inteso come supporto materiale ( cd, vinile, nastro ) rappresenta ormai il passato, mentre il supporto digitale rappresenta il presente e il futuro. La problematica di questa rivoluzione industriale è assai complessa ma è indubbio che l'artista emergente o meno, ne è fortemente coinvolto e in qualche modo indifeso. Personalmente ritengo che un artista emergente debba puntare innanzitutto sul web, sulla musica live, sui concerti che è un settore in forte crescita e una volta conquistato un suo mercato , si approcci poi in termini di buon rapporto contrattuale con il mercato discografico. Una volta accadeva il contrario. Se il disco di un esordiente vendeva bene si andava in tournèe, oggi invece un buon giro di concerti e un buon numero di contatti sulla rete, rappresentano i fondamenti per iniziare e sviluppare l'attività discografica vera e propria. E' paradossale ma per gli artisti emergenti questa è senz'altro una buona strada da seguire. In parole povere oggi è necessario costruirsi un proprio pubblico, un club di utenti fedeli e appassionati per poi andare a sedurre il mercato discografico ufficiale. Demandare questa operazione alla discografia senza un proprio "paracadute" è praticamente un miraggio. Poi esistono le eccezioni, ma per l'appunto sono eccezioni che confermano la regola. Per quanto riguarda i nuovi format televisivi, cioè i talent, possono aiutare certamente i cantanti, ma non certo i cantautori, dato che il concept di questi show è diretto esclusivamente alla esecuzioni di un repertorio di cover, cioè non inedito. Che i talent show uccidano la cultura cantautorale è fuor di dubbio.


Leggendo la sua biografia, ho visto che è stato tra i primi a notare gli "Elio e le storie tese", tra i tanti artisti di quel periodo, perché ha scelto proprio loro? e tornando ad oggi, cosa consiglia ad un artista emergente per farsi notare da un produttore?


L'esperienza con Elio e le Storie tese per quanto mi riguarda è stata marginale anche se molto divertente. Lavoravo come autore al programma satirico "Lupo Solitario" di Antonio Ricci. Dato che all'epoca ( anni 80 ) avevo messo in piedi un'agenzia artistica molto bizzarra e fuori dalle righe, sia in campo comico che musicale, Ricci mi affidò il casting musicale di nuove band in linea con la follia creativa dei suoi autori. Nel suo programma tv, scelsi band come Skiantos, Paco D'Alcatraz, L'Invasione degli Uomini Paprika ( con Jacopo Fo ), Panico alla Scala e i mitici Figli di Bubba di cui feci parte attiva come fondatore. Ovviamente invitai anche Elio e le Storie Tese che a Milano erano già un gruppo stracult. Seguì un album che produssi per la Polygram in cui Elio e le storie tese fecero il loro debutto discografico con una particolarissima incisione di "John Holmes , una vita per il cinema". In seguito collaborai con loro come promoter di concerti o come autore tv, ma il vero artefice discografico della band è sempre stato Claudio Dentes.


Ho letto che ha pubblicato un saggio, "Talent Shop", in cui racconta quarant'anni di discografia e di ricerca dei nuovi talenti, sono curioso di sapere se c'è una caratteristica comune a tutti gli artisti

che negli anni ha seguito o prodotto, un comun denominatore che in qualche modo lega le sue scelte discografiche


Ho lavorato con artisti diversissimi tra loro, da Alberto Fortis a Massimo Bubola da David Riondino a Paolo Conte, da Freak Antoni a Nicola Arigliano, da Roberto Benigni a Gianfranco Manfredi, da Mauro Pagani a Franz di Cioccio. Se c'è un file rouge tra loro è che tutti erano autori delle loro canzoni e delle loro musiche e cercavano di non assomigliare a nessun altro ma di essere fedeli alla loro personalità. Sono stato sempre affascinato dalle opere inedite, non certo dalle cover, anche se c'è modo e modo di farle le cover. Un conto solo le rielaborazioni di opere edite, un altro è riproporle senza alcuna originalità, cosa che purtroppo oggi accade troppo frequentemente in tv.


Roberto Manfredi ha lavorato in televisione, con etichette discografiche ed ha prodotto diversi artisti, ma pensa che oggi youtube e internet in generale, possono essere un'alternativa valida alla classica produzione?


Come dicevo prima ogni epoca ha le sue filosofie e caratteristiche industriali. Il web e youtube sono strumenti interessanti ma complessi. Garantiscono visibilità ma non garantiscono nessun possibile introito come diritto d'autore. Per me rappresentano solo mezzi promozionali che consentono anche una sicura libertà d' espressione artistica, cosa non secondaria, ma il business non esiste se non in minima parte e per chi ha la fortuna di avere qualche esperto di web marketing come collaboratore, poiché le visualizzazioni non si moltiplicano da sole, si creano appositamente.


Perché ha accettato il ruolo di direttore artistico dello Star Music Festival ?


Per un motivo molto semplice. Avere la possibilità di innovare, di collaborare a qualcosa di diverso e formativo che potesse rappresentare una valida alternativa ai tanti concorsi canori e talent tv tradizionali. I punti di forza del programma sono :

l'inserimento di nuove aree e categorie artistiche come il settore dei musicisti e compositori, lirica, cori, inediti.

La ricerca dei talenti da effettuarsi esclusivamente in strutture e luoghi dove si presuppone che il talento venga coltivato, promosso e insegnato, quindi le scuole e i centri professionali di musica e canto su tutto il territorio nazionale.

Una giuria altamente competente, formata da professionisti che hanno dedicato gran parte della loro vita alla musica, alla produzione discografica e all'insegnamento. Non divi tv scelti per facile opportunismo, ma professionisti validi e appassionati.

Senza queste premesse e fondamenta, avrei cortesemente rifiutato. Spero che questa esperienza possa mettere in luce dei giovani di talento che non trovano la giusta occasione per esprimere la loro creatività. Non cerchiamo imitatori o semplici bravi esecutori, ma persone che non assomiglino a nessun altro e che abbiano voglia di fuggire da questa dipendenza del revival, quella che chiamo da un po' di anni : COVERCRAZIA !


In conclusione, cosa consiglierebbe oggi ad un artista che aspira a vedere prodotto il suo primo album?


Quello che posso consigliare a un artista che debutta discograficamente è di non aspettarsi grandi risultati da subito. Il primo album è solo un seme che può germogliare ma prima di raccoglierne i frutti ce ne vuole. Oggi la vita di un disco è breve per cui bisogna cercare subito nuovi stimoli e continuare a scrivere, fare esperienze e collaborazioni con altri, suonare il più possibile dal vivo. Il mestiere di musicista o di cantante non è poi così diverso dagli altri anche se ha tempi e cadenze differenti rispetto a un lavoro normale. Bisogna concepire il proprio mestiere come un'esperienza continua senza farsi troppo condizionare da certi entourage che molto spesso tendono a reprimere o a scoraggiare le spinte di conoscenza e di approfondimento dell'artista. Nella musica bisogna essere attivi ed esplorare il più possibile, non si può stare a casa per dei mesi ad aspettare che l'album o il singolo pubblicato venda migliaia di copie da solo. Ho conosciuto molti artisti inglesi e americani di fama mondiale. Sono tutti dei grandi lavoratori, nel senso che anche se non hanno un disco programmato o una tournèe, non smettono mai di studiare, comporre, fare collaborazioni con altri artisti, oppure insegnano nelle scuole di musica, fanno i dimostratori eccellenti di nuovi strumenti, scrivono canzoni per altri interpreti, sigle e colonne sonore per film, documentari o altro. Lavorano sodo e per vocazione, non solo per i soldi o la fama.

La selezione sarà effettuata dal pubblico e da prestigiosi nomi del panorama dell'arte contemporanea, dell'architettura e del design.

Il pubblico selezionerà il vincitore dell'esclusiva residenza per artisti a Venezia. Dopo aver ricevuto l'iscrizione, It's LIQUID provvederà a caricare i lavori dei partecipanti sul sito ufficiale del Contest, inviando il link diretto delle proprie opere ad ogni artista. Per votare ed essere votati, è necessario diffondere il link e mettere "mi piace" sui lavori desiderati. L'artista col maggior numero di "mi piace" entro la data di scadenza del concorso, sarà il vincitore. La selezione pubblica si terrà a partire dal 07 Gennaio 2013, sino alla deadline del concorso. It's LIQUID Group, in collaboration with International ArtExpo, offers to artists, architects and designers from all over the world the possibility to participate with their works to It's LIQUID International Contest - Second Edition 2012, with a free theme and divided into ten categories:

The contest is born aiming at promoting contemporary art, photography, architecture and design through all the divulgating tools that the communication platform It's LIQUID has used for years (press release, mailing list with more than 80,000 subscribers, international contemporary art and design events realization). 
 
Awards
It's LIQUID International Contest promotes contemporary art, photography, architecture and design all over the world.
