MORPHOS - Sustainable Empires Festival internazionale di architettura, video arte, fotografia, installazione e performing art Inaugurazione: 06 giugno 2014   It's LIQUID Group, in collaborazione con International ArtExpo, è lieta di annunciare l'inaugurazione di MORPHOS - Sustainable Empires, festival internazionale di architettura, fotografia, video arte, installazione e performing art, che si terrà a Venezia nelle prestigiose sale di Palazzo Albrizzi, dal 06 al 13 giugno 2014. Questo primo evento inaugurerà il festival MORPHOS, organizzato a Venezia durante il periodo della Biennale di Architettura, da giugno a novembre 2014. Luca Curci (fondatore di LUCA CURCI ARCHITECTS, It's LIQUID Group ed International ArtExpo), analizza il potere unificante dell'architettura sostenibile e il rapporto tra uomo e città. Architetti e designer si sono confrontati sul tema dell'architettura sostenibile, nonché sulle interazioni e contaminazioni tra uomo e spazio urbano. Immaginiamo un futuro in cui il pensiero sostenibile diventi il terreno comune di ogni espressione architettonica; in cui l'ibridazione tra le diverse realtà sociali e culturali rappresenti la nuova frontiera del vivere contemporaneo. Artisti, fotografi e video maker hanno lavorato sul tema delle identità urbane e dell'ibridazione tra identità, corpi e città nella società contemporanea. Persone, corpi, società, e culture si mescolano ed interagiscono creando identità ibride, modificandosi l'un l'altro e evolvendo nella prospettiva di costruire un mondo migliore. Più di 90 tra artisti, fotografi, video maker e architetti esporranno i loro lavori durante il festival. La mostra sarà aperta al pubblico dal 6 giugno al 7 luglio 2014.   Palazzo Albrizzi è uno dei palazzi nobiliari dell'aristocrazia Veneziana, situato a Cannaregio 4118, vicino a Campo San Paolo. Costruito dalla famosa famiglia Capello, nel XVIII secolo il palazzo passò nelle mani della famiglia Albrizzi. Il palazzo è la sede di ACIT Venezia, una delle più importanti Associazioni Culturali Italo - Tedesche d'Europa; dal 2000 al 2005 ha assunto la Presidenza della Confederazione Nazionale degli Istituti Italo - Tedeschi in Italia, consorella della Vereinigung der Deutsch-Italienischen Kulturgesellschaften allora con sede a Bonn. University of Chile takes the lead in new QS University Rankings: Latin America

Buenos Aires is the region's most popular institution among graduate employers, but like UNAM suffers from a comparatively poor student/faculty ratio and low proportion of staff with a PhD.   Brazil and Chile have strengthened their dominance this year, with Mexico, Argentina and Colombia struggling to keep up. Brazil has three of the top four institutions and 10 of the top 20, while 16 of the 20 leading Chilean universities have improved their position.   "Universities from Mexico, Argentina and Colombia excel in specific areas, but they currently lack the all-round consistency of the top institutions from Brazil and Chile," says QS head of research Ben Sowter. "High student-to-faculty ratios are an issue at several major public research institutions throughout the region."   A total of 21 countries can boast at least one institution in this year's rankings, from Brazil with 88 to El Salvador and Puerto Rico, both with two. Brazil's tally puts it ahead of Mexico, with 46, followed by Colombia (41), Argentina (34) and Chile (30).

Unions take action on 'sea of shame'

The ITF (International Transport Workers' Federation) and its affiliated unions are launching a week of action today from ports on the Black Sea to combat what an updated report from the organisation finds are still shocking levels of crew abuse and unseaworthy vessels there.

 

Two years after the ITF and its unions in Black Sea countries launched an intensive campaign to expose these shameful conditions (see http://bit.ly/1ojQpj6), it remains one of the most dangerous places on earth to be a seafarer. This week of action is the latest step in the campaign to publicise and improve that disgraceful situation. Joint teams of ITF inspectors and union activists in Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine will use it to inspect ships, inform seafarers of their rights – particularly under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) – and highlight the need for drastic action by littoral state governments.

 

ITF maritime coordinator Tomas Abrahamsson commented: "Any honest observer will find themselves appalled by the low standards in this region. The state of some of these vessels and the abominable working conditions on them almost defy description.

 

"Unions are actively battling these conditions and, even in the face of current political events, they are focusing as usual on the interests of workers. There is, though, a crying need for genuine governmental action. There have been some encouraging detentions by port state control in Bulgaria and Russia but much more needs to be done."

In June 2012 ITF affiliated unions compiled the 'Black Sea of Shame' report to highlight the frequency of serious accidents and the poor living and working conditions endured by seafarers on vessels trading in the Black Sea area.

 

Since then, the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) entered into force on 20 August 2013 and is now in force in two countries in the region: Bulgaria (ratified 12 April 2010) and Russia (ratified 20 August 2012). Thus far however, a significant impact of the MLC has yet to be felt. The region is still a haven for older vessels with inadequate insurance operated by owners with scant regard for obligations to their crew. In addition political instability and a lack of political will make it difficult to develop robust national legislation and mechanisms to ensure effective implementation of internationally accepted standards. ITF inspectors in the region based in the ports of Batumi, Constanta, Istanbul, Novorossiysk and Odessa continue to handle multiple cases of non‐payment of wages, noncompliance with international standards, poor living and working conditions, and on occasion, abandonment and loss of life. This update collects together examples of cases that would indicate that much more work is needed before the region can shake off the ignominious title of 'Black Sea of Shame'.

The world’s largest Flight Attendant union, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), was joined today by the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) as well as the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) in calling on the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to deny an application for a foreign air carrier permit submitted by Norwegian Air International (NAI).

AFA, ETF and ITF once again spotlight the unfair labor practices established by NAI in their mission to enter the U.S. aviation market. NAI’s business plan is crafted to circumvent worker protections by evading international labor laws, creating unfair competition with EU and U.S. carriers and threatening to degrade labor standards both in the U.S. and in Europe.

Veda Shook, AFA International President stated: “AFA remains committed to a healthy and robust global aviation marketplace that provides career opportunities and good jobs for workers across the world. Competition and growth are essential to our industry but we must remain dedicated to promoting strong labor standards. Skirting international laws in order to gain unfair advantage cannot be tolerated. We call on Secretary Foxx to deny NAI’s current application before such labor practices become the norm in international aviation, triggering a race to the bottom.”

François Ballestero, the ETF Civil Aviation Political Secretary commented: “The attempt of Norwegian Air to import cheap labor from Asia by employing non-European cabin crew on its long-haul routes are an attack on working conditions of the existing workers. The ETF is committed to fight against social dumping and we urge the DOT to put an end to these unfair practices. And we are not alone in our concerns: the Norwegian Minister of Transport and Communications recently raised his concern to the European Commission about the challenges facing European aviation that are created by fragmented operations between multiple countries.”

Gabriel Mocho Rodriguez, ITF Civil Aviation Secretary added: “The practice of establishing subsidiaries and registering vessels under flags of convenience in order to avoid oversight and slash costs has long been a feature of the maritime industry. The results are well known: lower safety standards, sometimes shocking working conditions, little protection for workers. The ITF is well known for fighting these abuses. For decades we have been warning that the flags of convenience model could be copied in the aviation sector. Just last month, our cabin crew committee decisively rejected the outsourcing and flagging out practices of NAI. The AFA together with the IAM (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers), TWU (Transport Workers’ Union) and APFA (Association of Professional Flight Attendants), supported that resolve and are actively lobbying the U.S. government and urging it  to prevent those unacceptable practices being imported into the US. The ITF will continue to support their effort.”

The ETF represents more than 250,000 civil aviation workers all over Europe, including 80,000 cabin crews.
