The Race for Water Odyssey in one of the Largest Cities in the World to Fight Plastic Pollution
After a stopover in Japan, the Race for Water Odyssey (R4WO) is pursuing its actions in Shanghai, China, in order to learn more about recycling methods and policies in this country and raise awareness about the issue of plastic pollution. In the Chinese megalopolis, the MOD70 trimaran will also undergo a complete technical inspection.
Arrived in Shanghai after 6 calm days of sailing from Tokyo, the R4WO started this morning this Chinese stopover, which should be very enriching. China being an important consumer of recycled materials to maintain its dazzling growth as well as a large producer of waste due to its high-numbered population, the country has indeed had to develop new recycling methods over these last few years.
Therefore, managing plastic waste end-of-life of is a recurring and concerning issue for the country. Talking with local actors active in this area will therefore be at the heart of R4WO's priorities, as the team wants to learn as much as possible about these techniques. In addition, various actions to raise awareness will be organised in order to awaken consciousness on the growing problem of plastic pollution, which in the end, often flows into the oceans.
After Shanghai, where the "MOD70 Race for Water trimaran" will undergo a complete technical inspection, the R4WO will head to South Africa and will continue to carry out analyses on the islands of Koror (Palau Archipelago), Chagos and Rodrigues, located respectively in the garbage patch of the North Pacific Ocean and of the Indian Ocean.

Initiated by the Race for Water foundation, the "Race for Water Odyssey" is a unique expedition that aims to draw up the first global assessment of plastic pollution in the ocean by visiting island beaches situated in the 5 trash vortexes. In less than 300 days, over 40,000 nautical miles will be traveled, punctuated by 11 scientific stopovers and 9 outreach stopovers, involving a total of 13 countries.
