New York City to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Bloody Mary on Red Monday
| Tri-State Hospitality Association contact Natalie Smith 646-781-9468 New York City to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Bloody Mary on Red Monday Thousands of bars and taverns in the Big Apple will be celebrating Red Monday for the 75th anniversary of the Bloody Mary. The drink which is an American institution originated in Manhattan by a famous French bartender named Ferdinand Petiot when he came here in 1933. New York State and local officials will proclaim Bloody Mary Day and honor the granddaughter of Petiot with a citation and a Bloody Mary toast on Monday December 1, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. in the middle of Times Square at 1552 Broadway. A year-long celebration will take place throughout the United States with original Bloody Mary themed events. Millions consume Bloody Marys each day. Georgi Vodka and Murphy's Famous Bloody Mary Mix which are two local New York based companies will be handing out Bloody Marys throughout the tri-state area all day in honor of the anniversary. TGI Friday's Restaurants in New York City will be rolling back drink prices to 1933 levels. Martin Silver of Star Industries will join with officials from the Riese Organization which owns over 110 restaurants will be making a special announcement along with a special Bloody Mary that was invented by a local New Yorker, Steven Murphy, for the ceremony. The cocktail was originally called the "Red Snapper" because the term bloody was considered harsh for a drink in the 1930s. When Tabasco sauce was added to the drink the name "Bloody Mary" became a household word. XX Women made in south Italy
I am glad to inform you about an important artistic event I will take part at from october 31st to november 2nd.
It is sponsored by the italian Institute of Culture in New York, the fine arts academy of Reggio Calabria, the Provence of Reggio Calabria, the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria, the Commune of Reggio Calabria, Women Rose Movement of San Luca, the Presidency of the regional council, the Ministry for the Arts.
Here below a brief description of the project.
Artists are invited to take part at a great artistic event.
All artists will meet each other and live togheter in a B&B from october 31st to november 2nd to discuss about the artistic project, approach the town of San Luca and interpret the essence of the women who live in and collaborate with the Women Rose Movement of San Luca.
The artworks will be exhibited in a group show called "XX Women made in south Italy – Donne create in Italia" in New York and then in Reggio Calabria by the Province Palace.
Through this innovatory artistic event, the region of Calabria wants to communicate to Italy and to the whole world that now San Luca is not the base of \'ndrangheta anymore. It is healing itself and it requires peace. The italian authority has awarded the Women Rose Movement of San Luca and Rosy Canale, its founder and collaborator of the Reggio Calabria Academy as well, with the Giugno Locrese Prize - well known as Paolo Borsellino Prize – which is confered as a sign of admire and gratitude to those italian personalities who offered their engagement, consistency and courage in relation to their political and social action against violence and injustice.
Up to today many of these women have not still realized what is the real meaning of this award. But this made history. The news went round the newspapers, magazines and broadcasters of all over the world.
Beginning of october the "Los Angeles Times" published a wonderful reportage about this Movement and Rosy Canale. And so the "Sole 24 Ore" as well.
The press conference will take place on the 31st of October at 12.00 by the Province palace of Reggio Calabria. Prefect of Reggio, artists and curators will be present at the conference.

Nightclub boss BIG MAC ATTACK (Philippe Starck, Shvo, Bovis, Douglas Elliman) WANT BEEF??
New York City nightclub boss JE Englebert, the co-owner of Prime nightclub and Suzie Wong lounge is again pissed off..
For years, Englebert lived at the pristine "Downtown by Philippe Starck" building at 15 Broad Street in the Wall Street area. When the club owner heard the distinguished designer Philippe Starck, one of the most famous designers in the world had started to design a new building in the Gramercy Park area he jumped on the opportunity to buy in early. He bought another condo this time at the sumptuous "Gramercy Starck" 340 E 23rd Street high rise while it was under pre construction. Englebert figured the new location would be ideal, closer to his hot nightspots in West Chelsea. His elation turned to dismay quickly when the building's management allowed a storefront McDonald's to open. Is a tacky fast food joint the right image for a high end luxury building? Englebert thinks not. "McDonald's is a great American institution but does not belong at Gramercy Starck, a far star building. I've often come home, any time of the day and have found riff raff hanging outside the McDonald's. The sidewalk is littered with McDonald's wrappers. Plus the space reeks, you can smell burger grease."
Englebert has consulted a high priced lawyer and will be suing the building's sales, owners and management including Michael Shvo Real Estate, developer Bovis Lend Lease and Douglas Elliman Property Management for allowing this most unwelcome tenant to set-up shop. Englebert says "I have solid evidence that the building reps portrayed this as a high end building at the time of sale then allowing McDonald's in without disclosing this to any of the buildings buyers. The management was not acting in the best interest of the building by letting them in the commercial space. It was a shady move! If I knew about Mc Donald's before I closed on the unit I would have never bought there. All my neighbors are upset." Englebert has a lot of tenants behind him and is planning a class action suit.

The End of Bottle Service in NYC
As you know, the newly renovated Prime re-opens this Saturday, September 20, 2008
The renovation focused on fixing the things that just don't work in the current version of the club. The new Prime will be a high energy dance club. Prime was originally created to be more of a lounge and the newly re-mastered Prime is certainly not a lounge. The latest renovation will introduce world class sound and lights and a revamped "fun" decor which will bring back the "fun". The entrance/exit situation has been fixed. This will eliminate the "drama" of getting in, and the "confusion" caused when leaving or during re-entry. The table/banquette situation has been modified. As we all know, one of the most common complaints in Prime/Myst has been the size of the table space given to customers. The amount of tables will be decreased, while the size of the tables will be increased. Customers that buy "real estate" will be made to be comfortable, a novel new idea. This brings me to the most important point, the renovation of the club's attitude. The new club will be built around a new and simple concept "to cater to the customer".
Quo, then Myst and finally Prime were one of the most successful "bottle" venues in NYC. We took full advantage of that era. But now, that era is over and its time for a new model. For the past few, maybe even ten, years, NYC clubs have come to treat the customer as the enemy. Aggressive door staffs push customers around. They are made to wait hours to try and get in and if they are lucky for the "privilege" of buying 6 bottles of grey goose to get in. Bottles that are then served with an attitude, by a detached bottle hostess.
With the new Prime comes a new attitude and a new goal creating pleasure for the customer and making the party a fun party. Admission will no longer be driven by bottle sales. If someone looks good enough to get in and comes with the right attitude, they will get in without bottles. Likewise, if someone doesn't fit the mold they wont get in no matter how many bottles they offer to buy; the days of catering to the assh*** who is willing to buy 6 bottles at the expense of the nice guy who wants to pay cover is over. The hassle and "bottle" rat race at the door is now over. Bottle minimums will be replaced with "real estate minimums", where each table (piece of real estate) will be for sale for a certain amount of money; whether bottles of grey goose or bottles of water. Prospective customers will be allowed to combine larger groups of friends to purchase a comfortable section of real estate for their group. Example: 15 girls could now go in on an $800 dollar table and spend $50 each to drink and have their section all night. In this depressed and recessed economy the goal is to create an environment where the customers can go out to a fun place on Saturday nights without getting raped or abused at the door while spending thousands on bottles they don't want. Of course we will still sell bottles and offer bottles to anyone who wants them but the business model will not be based solely on the idea of extorting bottles at the door. The business model will be based on creating a fun product where people are treated like human beings at the door and all throughout their club experience.
In terms of revenue, we think that the gross revenue (and as such payouts) will stay the same or go up with more staying power. The old model was based on a large % of the room spending 0 and a few tables spending a TON to make the night work. The new model will be making a smaller amount of money per head from a larger pool of customers. The goal of the new Prime will be fun and customer service and to create an outstanding club product at a reasonable cost.
In an era where NYC clubs treat customers like enemies and adversaries we feel this is a new and novel approach that will work extremely well.

Schloss Homburg, ein Fachwerkbau aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, ist erbaut
auf steil aufragendem Tuffgestein über der Burkardusgrotte. Die Grotte,
Keimzelle des Dorfes, ist alljährlich am 12. Oktober Ziel der
festlichen Prozession zum Hl. Burkardus, dem ersten Bischof von
Würzburg. Mit freiem Blick über die Weinlandschaften des Mains erhebt
sich das Schloss über Homburg und ist seit 1998 ein Platz für die
zeitgenössische Kunst geworden.
12 KünstlerInnen werden 4 Wochen lang das Schloss und Homburg mit ihrer
Kunst beleben.
Inspiriert von dem Potential des Ortes zeigen sie ihre Werke in den
verschiedenen Bereichen des alten Gebsattelschlosses (1568):

The Homburg castle, a half-timbered building of the 16th century, was
built on a tuff rock over the Burkardus den. The den, the germ cell of
the village, is the destination of a solemn procession which takes
place every year on the 12th of October in honour of St. Burkardus,
Würzburg's first bishop. With its free view over the vineyards around
the Main, the castle dominates the Homburg village and since 1998 has
become a center of contemporary arts.
Twelve artists are going to animate the castle and the Homburg village
for four weeks. Inspired by the unique atmosphere of this site, they
will show their works in the various sceneries presented by the ancient
castle of the Gebsattel house: the palace, the chapel, the den, the
goat meadow, the tower, the St. Burkardus church, the Julius Echter
square, the flags, the cellar, the courtyard.

The second edition of the Photo Competition has been organized by L'Idea di Cleves and the FotoClub 99, an official FIAF circle (Italian Federation Photographic Associations).
The theme is the color "Red": a red detail which captures the view. [the Red s the most striking color].
The winner of the last edition was Alessandro Calabrese with his geometric "Giorni a perdere"
The jurymen will be Piero Cocco, Danilo Balducci, Marcello Pezzuti, Laura Rosica e Alessandro Fiorenzani.
The best photos will be exhibited in Palazzetto dei Nobili, an historical building in L'Aquila.

Journalist Prize and Journalist Archivi, intitled to Gio' Kappa – Giuseppe Massari
L'Idea di Cleves is attending to a project, patronized by the Province administration of L'Aquila. Our aim is to create a movie archive containing the tv reports of Gio' Kappa (Giuseppe Massari), a wellknown Aquilan journalist who passed away in 2002 at the age of 45.
This year will be the second edition of the prize intitled to Gio' Kappa.

Carlo Bernardini inaugurates to the Umbracle of the Ciudad De Las
Artes Y Las Ciencias in Valencia a new fibers optic installation
"Permeable Space".
Working with a unique system of fiber optics, Bernardini creates a
shifting, illusory network of illuminated lines that traverse the
space in weblike formations. Viewers' processes of perception are
challenged and overturned as they enter the created environment,
experiencing it from within and without.
His is a form of creativity that works on the basis of a code of
modifications in space reflecting variants produced by light. So much
is confirmed by the present research of Carlo Bernardini, who handles
light and shade like materials and substances, using
electro-luminescent surfaces and optical fibers with internal lighting
in a context of total darkness.
In these works with interior and exterior environmental light
installations, the optical superimposition of lines traversing a space
and lines running along the planes of the same space, viewed from a
certain position, can produce two-dimensional visual conditions.
Closing one eye, transforming it into a single lens, the image becomes
two-dimensional; as soon as the viewpoint shifts volumetric changes
come about, generating mirror image-forms.
The first impression is not of the optical fibers themselves, but
rather of transparent plates of glass lit up along the sides.
The optical fibers only reveal the empty space they enclose in a
subsequent phase of perception.
The observer can enter into a sort of illusory space, experiencing the
installation from within and without.
CARLO BERNARDINI was born in Viterbo in 1966 and obtained his diploma
at the Fine Arts Academy in Rome in 1987. In 1997 he wrote the
theoretical essay on "The division of visual unity", which was
published by Stampa Alternativa. In 2000 and 2005 he received a grant
"Overseas Grantee" from the Pollock - Krasner Foundation of New York,
and in 2002 the prize Targetti Art Light Collection "White Sculpture".
He has created and installed permanent public sculptures in stainless
steel and optic fibres in various Italian cities. He currently teaches
at the Fine Arts Academy of "Brera" in Milan. He lives and works both
in Milan.

CONCURSO FOTOGRAFICO DE INTELIGENCIA EMOCIONAL
Hola queridos amigos de la fotografía !!! Es una alegría comunicarnos con Uds., para invitarlos a participar del Concurso fotográfico "La vida a través de las emociones", en el marco del 1° Congreso Internacional de Inteligencia Emocional America IE a realizarse en la ciudad de Cordoba - Argentina en el mes de Agosto. El Concurso tiene como objetivo ser una herramienta de expresión visual que represente una variada gama de emociones, estimule la creatividad y genere mayor conciencia respecto al valor que tienen las emociones en nuestra vida al reconocerlas, ver cómo nos influyen y cómo se expresan. El mismo está abierto a todos los que deseen participar, sean aficionados o profesionales. Con las imágenes recibidas se realizará una exposición fotográfica durante el Congreso y también serán expuestas en diversos medios gráficos. Sculptures produce a unique mood and distinct atmosphere; they enrich the ways that culture can be enjoyed both by locals and visitors to the city alike. The possibility to explore barrier-free communication using works of art in the streets and on city squares not only helps build up a relationship to art, but also cultivates the aesthetic insight and awareness of the viewer. Every summer quality art and distinguished artistic figures from all over the world come together in Bratislava.
This annual event enjoys exceptional popularity and interest not just from the general public but also professional circles. At a previous year of the exhibition the then rector of the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts, Professor Adam Farkaš, even noted that Bratislava is becoming the European capital of sculpture every summer thanks to this event.
Now in its thirteenth year, this year the event will involve an even greater number of works (more than 200), participating artists (67) and countries (22), and it will take place at more venues than it ever did before.
In addition to outdoor sites on the city squares Hviezdoslavovo námestie and Františkánske námestie with large dimension works of artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Spain and Korea, and in the courtyard of Primate's Palace with works of the "stars" of this year's exhibition, outstanding Polish artist Igor Mitoraj and the no less renowned Czech artist Olbram Zoubek, the artistic works of over 60 artists will also be put on show in the "chamber" environment of the various participating galleries. Joining local Slovak artists will be others from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Italy, France, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Croatia, Spain, Japan, Korea, Israel, Brazil, Russia, Great Britain and Georgia.
The premises on the 1st floor of Dom umenia (House of Art) will be the venue for a broadly conceived display of artists from various countries entitled Art Without Frontiers. Art has always ignored barriers that endeavour incomprehensibly to separate and prevent the open and free promotion of artistic values. The works of artists of various genres and generations, using different expressive and material means, present a mission of co-operation and better mutual understanding through the universal communication medium that is fine art.
In addition to various Slovak artists like Peter Roller, Ján Hoffstädter and Ingrid Višňovská, Daniel Brunovský, or Ľubo Stacho, for instance, other works on display will include those of young Finnish artists the likes of Vesa-Pekka Rannikko and Jari Mannisto, as well as the large dimension installation Flags from Markus Kahre, winner of the 2007 Ars Fennica Prize for young artist; there will be works from renowned artists from other countries as well, including Lis Andersen (DK), Susanne Kathlen Mader (N), Barbro Raen Thomassen (N), Fredrik Raddum (N), Gunnar Carl Nilsson (S), Bert van Loo (NL), Roland de Jong Orlando (NL), Gebhard Sengmüller (A), Mitsouko Mori (J), Carlos Galvao (BR), Gjalt Blauw (NL), Neven Bilić (HR) recommended to be included by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, or Alexander Pankin (RUS), already renowned also in this part of the world.
In Mirbach Palace of Bratislava City Gallery visitors will have the chance to see works of four Italian artists at the exhibition entitled Italian Lights, in the curator concept of Lia de Venere. They are Giuseppe Teofilo, Carlo Bernardini, Filippo Centenari and Carlo Steiner whose works creatively utilise and play with lights;
In Gallery Z there will be an installation – exhibition of Hungarian artist István Gellér B. – A Growing City;
in the Gallery of the French Institute curator Zsuzsa Dárdai will present the works of two French representatives of the MADI movement, Jean Charass and Saint-Cricq;
in the Gallery of the Austrian Cultural Forum in co-operation with Galerie Martin Janda from Vienna, the installations of young Austrian artist Johannes Vogel will be exhibited;
in the Gallery of the Czech Centre the author of the large dimension work created specially for this exhibition , Shrine for Bratislava and installed on Františkánske námestie, Václav Fiala, will put on a selection of his more intimate constructivist work;
in the Gallery of the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre acclaimed sculptor and organiser of symposia from Bulgarian Ilindentci, Ivan Russev, will present his stone sculptures;
The Kressling Gallery at its new address on Zámočnícka ulica is involved in the project with a selection of works from young Slovak and Czech artists - 7 Sculptors, where among others visitors can see works of Erik Binder, Viktor Frešo, Mário Chromý, Kristof Kinter (CZ) or Evžen Šimera;
one floor up at the same address in Komart Gallery you will find works of Federico Diaz from the Czech Republic;
and finally Gallery Forzet will have exhibit works of Milan Lukáč.
This year's SCULPTURE and OBJECT XIII also welcomes the 3rd International Sculpture Symposium L´Art pour la Santé SO-CHA, Topolčianky 2008, from 13 – 31 August 2008
and the official opening of the exhibition of small sculptures and drawings of sculptors in Gallery M in Rovinka at 3 pm on 17 August 2008.

The possibility to explore barrier-free communication using works of art in the streets and on city squares not only helps build up a relationship to art, but also cultivates the aesthetic insight and awareness of the viewer. Every summer quality art and distinguished artistic figures from all over the world come together in Bratislava.
This annual event enjoys exceptional popularity and interest not just from the general public but also professional circles. At a previous year of the exhibition the then rector of the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts, Professor Adam Farkaš, even noted that Bratislava is becoming the European capital of sculpture every summer thanks to this event.
Now in its thirteenth year, this year the event will involve an even greater number of works (more than 200), participating artists (67) and countries (22), and it will take place at more venues than it ever did before.
In addition to outdoor sites on the city squares Hviezdoslavovo námestie and Františkánske námestie with large dimension works of artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Spain and Korea, and in the courtyard of Primate's Palace with works of the "stars" of this year's exhibition, outstanding Polish artist Igor Mitoraj and the no less renowned Czech artist Olbram Zoubek, the artistic works of over 60 artists will also be put on show in the "chamber" environment of the various participating galleries. Joining local Slovak artists will be others from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Italy, France, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Croatia, Spain, Japan, Korea, Israel, Brazil, Russia, Great Britain and Georgia.
The premises on the 1st floor of Dom umenia (House of Art) will be the venue for a broadly conceived display of artists from various countries entitled Art Without Frontiers. Art has always ignored barriers that endeavour incomprehensibly to separate and prevent the open and free promotion of artistic values. The works of artists of various genres and generations, using different expressive and material means, present a mission of co-operation and better mutual understanding through the universal communication medium that is fine art.
In addition to various Slovak artists like Peter Roller, Ján Hoffstädter and Ingrid Višňovská, Daniel Brunovský, or Ľubo Stacho, for instance, other works on display will include those of young Finnish artists the likes of Vesa-Pekka Rannikko and Jari Mannisto, as well as the large dimension installation Flags from Markus Kahre, winner of the 2007 Ars Fennica Prize for young artist; there will be works from renowned artists from other countries as well, including Lis Andersen (DK), Susanne Kathlen Mader (N), Barbro Raen Thomassen (N), Fredrik Raddum (N), Gunnar Carl Nilsson (S), Bert van Loo (NL), Roland de Jong Orlando (NL), Gebhard Sengmüller (A), Mitsouko Mori (J), Carlos Galvao (BR), Gjalt Blauw (NL), Neven Bilić (HR) recommended to be included by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, or Alexander Pankin (RUS), already renowned also in this part of the world.
In Mirbach Palace of Bratislava City Gallery visitors will have the chance to see works of four Italian artists at the exhibition entitled Italian Lights, in the curator concept of Lia de Venere. They are Giuseppe Teofilo, Carlo Bernardini, Filippo Centenari and Carlo Steiner whose works creatively utilise and play with lights;
In Gallery Z there will be an installation – exhibition of Hungarian artist István Gellér B. – A Growing City;
in the Gallery of the French Institute curator Zsuzsa Dárdai will present the works of two French representatives of the MADI movement, Jean Charass and Saint-Cricq;
in the Gallery of the Austrian Cultural Forum in co-operation with Galerie Martin Janda from Vienna, the installations of young Austrian artist Johannes Vogel will be exhibited;
in the Gallery of the Czech Centre the author of the large dimension work created specially for this exhibition , Shrine for Bratislava and installed on Františkánske námestie, Václav Fiala, will put on a selection of his more intimate constructivist work;
in the Gallery of the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre acclaimed sculptor and organiser of symposia from Bulgarian Ilindentci, Ivan Russev, will present his stone sculptures;
The Kressling Gallery at its new address on Zámočnícka ulica is involved in the project with a selection of works from young Slovak and Czech artists - 7 Sculptors, where among others visitors can see works of Erik Binder, Viktor Frešo, Mário Chromý, Kristof Kinter (CZ) or Evžen Šimera;
one floor up at the same address in Komart Gallery you will find works of Federico Diaz from the Czech Republic;
and finally Gallery Forzet will have exhibit works of Milan Lukáč.
This year's SCULPTURE and OBJECT XIII also welcomes the 3rd International Sculpture Symposium L´Art pour la Santé SO-CHA, Topolčianky 2008, from 13 – 31 August 2008
and the official opening of the exhibition of small sculptures and drawings of sculptors in Gallery M in Rovinka at 3 pm on 17 August 2008.

Topping Out Completed on 19-Story Sky Garage Luxury Condo at 200 11th Avenue in Chelsea, says Architect of Record, Steven Kratchman.
All concrete has now been poured. The 19-story, 16 unit, luxury condominium tower at 200 11th Avenue in Chelsea in New York City was topped out today, according to the building's Architect of Record, Steven Kratchman, AIA.
200 11th Avenue is often referred to as the sky garage building, because it's designed with a car elevator that travels vertically to all of the residential units. Each luxury apartment will be sold with an attached garage, similar to a suburban home, but stacked vertically, Mr. Kratchman said. The upper façade will be made of stainless steel panels. The four base stories are to be clad in terra cotta.
Located in the former warehouse district of West Chelsea in Manhattan, 200 11th Avenue will offer expansive views of the Hudson River.
Architect and Urban Designer Steven Kratchman, AIA, is the founder and CEO of the firm Steven Kratchman Architect, PC. Before establishing his own firm, Mr. Kratchman served as lead architect on the now world renowned Chelsea Piers complex in Manhattan. The Kratchman firm was recently contracted by Surround Art to create their architectural master plan for a clean, green Silver LEED industrial campus at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
We are honored to be the Architect of Record of 200 11th Avenue, working with the esteemed Design Architect Annabelle Selldorf on this elegantly designed project," Mr. Kratchman said. Construction is expected to be completed in February, 2009.

The Architect of Record is the firm Steven Kratchman Architect, P.C., of New York City, Steven Kratchman, Founder and CEO. The owner is Gaia House LLC, which is a partnership between Urban Muse LLC and YoungWoo & Associates.
The Kratchman and Selldorf firms were previously paired as Architect of Record and Design Architect, respectively, on a six-story vertical addition to an existing three-story former warehouse in the lower Manhattan meatpacking district at 415 West 13th Street.
Steven Kratchman Architect, P.C., was founded in 1999 by Steven Kratchman, AIA, architect and urban designer, who previously served as Senior Designer for the team that transformed an abandoned New York City urban harbor area into the now world-renowned Chelsea Piers.
His firm has grown from two architects to a professional staff of 15, who work on retail, commercial and residential projects, multi-family residential, single-family residential, historic and landmark properties, private clubs and sports facilities, educational institutions, new from-the-ground-up buildings and restaurants.

drawing at the centre of its artistic performance and visual
perception. Drawing – often preceded by a rough sketch- is, like
writing, closely related to the inspiration of thinking, and thus
belongs to the most direct and spontaneous forms of artistic
expression. "What cannot be said, must be drawn" is our paraphrase of
Ludwig Wittgenstein's famous philosophical maxim. Influenced by new
media and expanding concepts of art, drawing is opening new horizons.
But the latter are still bound together by the power of the drawn
line.

Autodesk Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2009 Revenue of $599 Million
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) today reported revenue of $599 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009, an increase of 18 percent over the first quarter of fiscal 2008. First quarter net income was $95 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, on a GAAP basis and $117 million, or $0.50 per diluted share, on a non-GAAP basis. Net income in the first quarter of the prior year was $83 million, or $0.34 per diluted share on a GAAP basis, and $107 million, or $0.44 per diluted share on a non-GAAP basis. A reconciliation between GAAP and non-GAAP results is provided at the end of this press release.
"Fiscal 2009 is off to a good start with our solid first quarter results," said Carl Bass, Autodesk president and CEO. "International markets, especially emerging economies, continue to underpin our overall revenue growth. We also continue to experience strong growth of our 3D products. Autodesk continues to drive innovative design technologies into a variety of industries - architecture, engineering, manufacturing, media and entertainment - and we will continue to work hard to shape the evolution of industry design trends such as Digital Prototyping and Building Information Modeling."
Operational Highlights
In addition to favorable currency exchange rates, Autodesk's performance in the first quarter of fiscal 2009 was driven by revenue from new seats, continued customer adoption of our 3D design solutions, and strong revenue growth in emerging economies.
Revenue from the emerging economies increased 41 percent over the first quarter of fiscal 2008 to $101 million and represented 17 percent of total revenue.
The outstanding growth in emerging economies led to strong performance in our EMEA and Asia Pacific regions. EMEA revenue was $259 million, an increase of 25 percent as reported over the first quarter of fiscal 2008, and 11 percent at constant currency. Revenue in Asia Pacific was $149 million, an increase of 27 percent as reported year-over-year, and 18 percent at constant currency. Faced with continued economic headwinds, revenue in the Americas increased 4 percent over the first quarter of fiscal 2008 to $191 million, as expected.
Combined revenue from the Company's model-based 3D products, Inventor, Revit, Civil 3D, NavisWorks, and Robobat, increased 37 percent over the first quarter of fiscal 2008 to $146 million and comprised 24 percent of total revenue. Autodesk shipped approximately 35,000 commercial seats of its model- based 3D design products, including 11,500 commercial seats of Inventor and 24,000 seats of its Architecture, Engineering and Construction products - Revit, Civil 3D, and NavisWorks. In addition, revenue from 2D vertical products increased 16 percent compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2008.
Revenue from new seats increased by 23 percent compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2008.
Upgrade revenue and maintenance revenue combined increased 16 percent over the first quarter of fiscal 2008 to $228 million. Maintenance revenue increased 33 percent compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2008 to $167 million, or 28 percent of total revenue. Deferred maintenance revenue increased $40 million sequentially and $130 million compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2008. As expected, total upgrade revenue decreased 14 percent compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2008.

For fiscal year 2009, net revenue is expected to be in the range of $2.45 billion and $2.50 billion. Full year GAAP earnings per diluted share are now expected to be in the range of $1.78 and $1.88.
