[It's LIQUID News] Major Francisco Zúñiga Centennial Tribute Exhibition

Major Francisco Zúñiga Centennial Tribute Exhibition in Final Weeks: Closing September 14, 2013

Los Angeles, CA - Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles, currently presenting "Francisco Zúñiga: A Centennial Tribute", a formidable exhibition of works by the major 20th century artist, (b. Costa Rica 1912 - d. Mexico 1998), has announced that this critically cited major exhibition will be extended through September 14, 2013.

Celebrating the centennial of Francisco Zúñiga, the exhibition at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts follows museum tribute exhibitions at the Ernst Barlach Stiftung in Gustrow, Germany and the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) in Mexico City. Further museum exhibitions will soon be announced.

This exhibition in Los Angeles presents fifty works spanning the artist's long career, and includes a recently rediscovered rare stone sculpture from 1932; the period when Zúñiga came to national attention in his native Costa Rica as both a painter and sculptor. In 1936, the artist moved to Mexico, where he resided the rest of his life. Also included in the exhibition are exceedingly rare paintings on canvas from that early period, after which Zúñiga increasingly dedicated himself to sculpture and became known as the most celebrated sculptor of Latin America. Among the works in the exhibition are bronze sculpture, drawings, watercolors, and selected original graphic works on paper.

A consummate draftsman and sculptor, Zúñiga's works celebrate the female form as an elemental force. Drawing on pre-Columbian and classical sources, they are often depicted as sensual, but always heroic. These sculptures and drawings of women - as matriarch or adolescent - have today become powerful and iconic images, widely establishing Francisco Zúñiga as Mexico's and Costa Rica's greatest modern sculptor, and according to one recent study, Mexico's most internationally collected artist.

Francisco Zúñiga's works are in the permanent collections of museums internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum of Art and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Mexico, the Latin American Museum of Art, Buenos Aires, the Museo de Arte Costarricense, and the Middelheim Sculpture Garden, Antwerp, among many others.

It is notable that Zúñiga's importance was early realized in California, where his reputation and legions of collectors - both private and institutional - is formidable. In addition to LACMA (which also commissioned an important graphic work in 1976, included in this exhibition), significant sculptures and drawings by Zúñiga are included in important Southern California museums such as the UCLA Sculpture Gardens, University of Southern California, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, and the San Diego Museum of Art.

An endeavor to document Zúñiga's entire body of work, is currently underway, as Volume V of Francisco Zúñiga, A Catalogue Raisonne is in development. The Estate of Francisco Zúñiga is represented by Jack Rutberg Fine Arts.

Francisco Zúñiga: A Centennial Tribute extends through September 14, 2013 at Jack Ruberg Fine Arts Gallery, located at 357 North La Brea Avenue, in Los Angeles. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 - 6:00; Saturday 10:00 - 5:00. For additional information, please phone 323-938-5222.

Dario Scapitta Design

Dario Scapitta is an Italian artist born in Valenza, a capital of the Italian jewelry business. He lives now in The Netherlands, where he started to work on new personal ideas and finally in 2012, the Dario Scapitta Design was born. As a very independent company, he is investing his energy and background knowledge creating his personal collections, trying to design different objects that people like to wear.

For him, jewelry design is not only diamonds and gold, but also different materials. For this reason, the 3d printing technology seems perfect for him, allowing him to experiment with different materials, playing with colours and shapes always focused on the sense of beauty.

He is constantly inspired by nature, fashion, arts, architecture and everything surrounds him. In June 2011 his STONE necklace won the second place on the "3D printed jewelry contest" by i.Materialise. In "The Hats off to 3D Printing Design Challenge", another i.Materialise contest, his BUTTERFLY hat was selected as runner-up and showed for the first time in the beautiful fashion show during the "Materialise World Conference" in Leuven (Belgium).

All his collections are realised in polyamide (sintered nylon) using 3d print technology, a flexible and strong material. He is also working using other materials like silver which his PEPITA collection is an example. These pieces are 3d printed in wax and then produced through the lost wax casting procedure. He is now working on new designs and projects where he would like to mix different materials together like stainless steel or silver and polyamide.

Afghani musicians jam with German jazz masters from a secret location to a world radio audience

The European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) new music video exchange platform, EURORADIO2SEE, lifted the curtain on a musical tradition rarely glimpsed by the outside world when Afghan musicians jammed with German masters of jazz at a secret location on Tuesday (27/8).

The concert, which was the first ever live webcast of traditional music from Afghanistan, was picked up by 16 public service broadcasters as part of an exclusive video stream from the platform, launched in July.

Specific details of the performance were kept confidential to protect the artists, who have set their passion for musical collaboration above the risks of performing in a country historically known for musical celebration.

During the rule of the Taliban, many musicians fled the country to avoid persecution; in recent years, a handful of traditional artists have returned to the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) to pass on their skills to younger generations.

Afghan master musicians and their students were joined in concert by SAFAR, a trio of young German Jazz players from the renowned Franz Liszt University for Music, in Weimar, as part of the Aga Khan Music Initiative.

EURORADIO Project Manager Laurent Marceau says the concert demonstrates music's power to unite diverse groups.

"The observation that music is a universal language that transcends boundaries and bridges cultures is often overworked," said Mr Marceau. "However, in this instance, the phrase almost fails to do justice to the power of this event. With the support of RBB Kulturradio (Germany), EURORADIO2SEE enabled EBU Members to provide their audiences with an exceptional experience, proof that Afghanistan's musical heritage lives."

The concert featured the venerable artist Ustad Amruddin, who is one of a handful of master musicians from the pre-Taliban era who has returned to the country to pass on his knowledge. He plays the dilruba, a stringed instrument played with a bow.

RBB Kulturradio journalist and music producer Johannes Theurer says the performance symbolizes joy returning to Afghanistan.

"EURORADIO2SEE provides these brave musicians with a stage before the outside world," he said. "We have the chance to share and support this vision, and express respect for those who want to ensure their musical heritage exists for the next generation."

PlanetSolar reaches Europe and stops in Oostende

PlanetSolar reaches Europe and stops in Oostende

Having left St. John's (Canada) on August 6, the largest solar ship in the world reached Europe on August 28, after crisscrossing the North Atlantic for 23 days and traveling 4598 kilometers. During the second 2013 transatlantic crossing, the collection of scientific data carried as part of the "PlanetSolar DeepWater" expedition continued. Transformed into a scientific platform, the ship enabled a team of researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) to take advantage of her exclusive features in order carry out an exclusive campaign of physical and biological measurements along the Gulf Stream. A series of events will be held onboard the ship, which will remain moored in Oostende until August 30, before setting sail for London (United Kingdom).

The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar returned to the old continent after 23 days of navigation. At an average speed of 4.5 knots, travelling 4598 kilometers across the North Atlantic proved to be difficult in terms of navigation. "The weather conditions were particularly unfavorable during this crossing! The wind, first during our southern descent, then the current, and finally a much lower than average amount of sunshine in the region for this time of year!" said Gérard d'Aboville, captain of the ship.

The "PlanetSolar DeepWater" scientific expedition's last phase of measurements will begin in Oostende. "The final phase is of particular interest because data will be collected on the outskirts on an urban area. We have already observed some very interesting results around Boston. I look forward to discovering what measures will be taken around the British capital," explains Jérôme Kasparian, UNIGE researcher and member of the expedition's scientific committee.

Alongside the events dedicated to local authorities, the net destined for use during the floating plastic waste collection campaign (carried out in collaboration with Waste Free Oceans) will be tested during the Belgian stop.

Next, the ship will leave for London (United Kingdom), the stopover which will conclude the phase of exclusive measurements conducted as part of the "PlanetSolar DeepWater" scientific expedition

The "PlanetSolar DeepWater" scientific expedition

Launched in Florida in early June, the "PlanetSolar DeepWater" expedition covered over 8,000 kilometers, using advanced instruments and the expertise of the UNIGE scientists to collect a continuous series of physical and biological measurements along the Gulf Stream, both in the water and in the air. Led by Professor Martin Beniston, the research team studied the key parameters of climate regulation, namely aerosols and phytoplankton, in order to better understand the complex interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere, as well as the role these interactions play in climate change.

The researchers were particularly interested in the phenomenon of ocean vortexes—large whirlpools that break away from the main part of the Gulf Stream—that influence heat exchanges with the atmosphere as well as the behavior of phytoplankton.

About PlanetSolar

The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, built in Kiel, Germany, is a catamaran powered exclusively by solar energy. On May 4, 2012, after sailing for 584 days, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar completed the first solar-powered trip around the world.

For her 2013 expeditions, the ship underwent major maintenance operations. The most significant optimization was related to the propulsion system—the surface propellers were replaced by a completely immerged system. In addition, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar crew is comprised of: Gérard d'Aboville (Captain), Brieuc Delbot (Second), Antoine Simon (electrical engineer), Hugo Buratti (seaman and steward), and Vincent Brunet (steward). During the "PlanetSolar DeepWater" expedition, the UNIGE scientific team rounded out the crew.

In order to fund the 2013 campaign, PlanetSolar SA is supported by the University of Geneva, Ciel électricité, Switcher, the Swiss AOC-IGP Association, Younicos, Plantbacter, Actides, GoPro, Jean-René Germanier SA, BCCC Attorneys-at-Law, Tempur, Hempel, Présence Suisse, Energissima, UIM, YELLO, and Waste Free Oceans.

About the University of Geneva

Founded in 1559 by Jean Calvin and Théodore de Bèze, the University of Geneva (UNIGE) is now the second largest "Haute École" in Switzerland, and ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. Crown jewel of the Calvin community, the institution enjoys a privileged international reputation and cultivates its openness to the world. UNIGE welcomes approximately 16,000 students each year to its eight colleges, dealing with the essential domains of science, medicine, literature, economic and social sciences, law, theology, psychology, education, translation, and interpretation sciences. UNIGE has three missions: education, research, and service to the community. Additionally, UNIGE has been a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) since 2002. The University of Geneva would like to thank the Wright Foundation, the Henri Moser Foundation, and a generous anonymous donor for their support for the PlanetSolar DeepWater scientific campaign.

Meze Audiophile Headphones: When Sound Meets Style

Award-winning industrial designer and music lover Antonio Meze's stylish headphones have struck a chord with art enthusiasts, fashionistas and audiophiles alike. These wooden headphones have the potential to achieve cult status; it's tough to decide whether to prize them for their cutting edge audio technology or as an art collectible.

Meze's innovative range of headphones have been causing a commotion in the audio technology world since their launch in 2011. Each addition to the collection has been received graciously by Meze fanatics, and has successfully catered to a new audio need. Providing the perfect solution for today's style conscious audiophiles, a pair of Meze headphones isn't a fashion fix; it's a lifestyle investment.

Meze headphones are carefully handcrafted from ebony wood, which produces a seductively warm, natural sound. Powerful neodymium speakers featured across the range ensure that their sound quality is second to none. It's easy to see that Meze's attention to detail is uncompromising; even the headphones' plugs are gold plated. The fact that each headphone is entirely unique, with a feature being made of the ebony wood grain, never fails to impress those who are lucky enough to lay eyes on a pair. For some, perhaps these headphones appeal more a work of art than a high performance audio accessory. The Meze 11 Classics are compatible with almost all the audio devices on the market today; these unique headphones aren't just pleasing to the senses, they are entirely multifunctional.

Meze has succeeded in creating a range of headphones which appeal universally, and promise never to go out of fashion. Constructed with durability in mind by the leading innovators in sound and design, it really is worth investing in a pair of these high-end headphones.

Italian delicacies producer INPA SpA has squid and cuttlefish sustainable and socially accountable Fri

Italian squid and cuttlefish delicacies from INPA SpA are verified sustainable and socially accountable by Friend of the Sea

Friend of the Sea announced certification of squid and cuttlefish products by Tuscan supplier INPA S.p.A.  The audit was run by an accredited  international certification body and based on Friend of the Sea strict social and environmental requirements.

The audit of the handline vessels was run at the Vietnamese harbor of Lagi. The squid and cuttlefish are caught by small artisanal vessels which use lamps and hook and line. Because of the artisanal fishing method, with bamboo boats, no bycatch nor discards occurr. All vessels are regularly registered and none is included in the IUU list.

The fishery had to implement stricter waste management and social accountability measures in order to be able to be certified as Friend of the Sea.  "We believe it is extremely important that, as a consequence of Friend of the Sea audit, the fishery has improved its social and environmental policies. This way we can also contribute to improvements in fishermen's lives and the coastal environment." comments Mr Perzia, Quality Manager of Inpa S.p.A.

[It's LIQUID News] Yu Hiraoka

Yu Hiraoka

Yu Hiraoka is a young product designer based in Milan, Italy. As a designer, his principle is "FUN"ctional Design. By adding "FUN" elements into function, the designer believes it improves people's lives and bring them a lot of happiness. In September his works will be exhibited during London Design Festival.

GIOCHIAMO is an unit of shelves which contains play of combining them. They are medium-sized shelves you can put them on on tables or cabinets. Tre Parole is a vase which consists of three metal pipes and an acrylic piece. Hiraoka sought a simple shape with a smart structure and a way of showing flowers in an elegant way. This iconic object suits interiors of houses, shops, restaurants, hotels, and theatres in harmony.

A project called Spirit is a camera that fits an elegant bar. Many people bring the camera to record fun times when they go to an elegant bar. And they also dress up to make themselves comfortable or look attractive. This camera is a great item to bring to an elegant bar because this camera is not only for capturing fun times, but also as a fashion item for people who want to look attractive. Hiraoka got the inspiration of this styling from luxurious alcohol bottles.

Planet without the "E" is a mini planter set you can display on tables or inside shelves. Separate parts of this planter allow you to play with construction by combining pieces.
