ITF Seafarers' Trust awards GBP100,000 to help Filipino seafarers

The ITF Seafarers' Trust – the charity arm of the International Transport Workers" Federation – today authorised two grants totalling GBP100,000 to aid Filipino seafarers and their families affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

The grants, for GBP50,000 each are being awarded to the Associated Marine Officers' and Seamen's Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP) and the Philippine Seafarers Union (PSU) to help them deliver emergency relief for seafarers and their families.

ITF Seafarers' Trust chair Dave Heindel commented: "Around 300,000 of the world's seafarers are from the Philippines, many of them from the worst hit areas. These two grants will allow us to provide targeted help to them.

"The Seafarers' Trust is trying to alleviate at least some of the awful effects of the tragedy that hit the Philippines, a country which is fundamental to the maritime world. With this aid the Trust is hoping to help many seafarers to get back on their feet, and to support  them at this difficult time."

Double digit growth in Russian recycled containerboard production

Russia achieves higher profits compared with Western European market after increasing its usage of recycled containerboard over the last 4 years.

BRUSSELS, Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite a limited supply of recovered paper in Russia, recycled containerboard production is outpacing virgin containerboard production. Over the last 3 years recycled containerboard production grew 11.3% each year, while production of virgin containerboard grew 3.7%. These findings were published today in a new study by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20080521/NEW122LOGO )

"Double-digit production growth has resulted in Russian domestic Testliner 2 prices reaching 1.7 times their variable costs in the 2010-2012 period. This is much higher than the 1.25 ratio experienced by the Western European recycled containerboard industry," said Orifjon Abidov, Senior Economist, Packaging Papers at RISI.

The Outlook for Russian Paper Packaging Markets provides an independent and thorough analysis of the sub-segments of the Russian packaging paper markets. It includes coverage of containerboard, cartonboard, wrapping and specialty papers from 2002-2012 with forecasts through 2018. The study will help you understand the Russian paper packaging markets and the influences that will drive them.

Included in the Outlook for Russian Paper Packaging Markets:

  • Overview of paper packaging demand by region in Russia
  • Analysis of real and gross market share of producers in Russian containerboard, cartonboard and sack and wrapping paper grades
  • Technical comparison of containerboard machines with corrugator specifications
  • Analysis of brown testliner and brown kraftliner manufacturing costs
  • Containerboard price development in Russian regions
  • Forecast of demand, supply, exports & imports, for the Russian containerboard, cartonboard and wrapping papers industries

Arup resilience pushes the firm past £1 billion

Arup resilience pushes the firm past £1 billion

·         Arup Group turnover exceeds £1 billion for the first time

·         Employee ownership model continues to deliver results

(London) Arup, the global design engineering firm, saw its turnover pass the £1 billion mark for the first time as the firm released its results for the financial year ending 31st March 2013.

Overall, Arup's global income came in at £1.03 billion for the year, an increase of 3.9% on the previous 12 months. Operating profit for the period was positive at £23.7 million, so despite an extremely competitive global operating environment Arup once again demonstrated the resilience of the group.

Announcing the 2013 financial results, Arup Group Chairman, Philip Dilley, said, "I am delighted to be able to say that for the first time in its history Arup is a £1 billion firm. It is a significant milestone that comes with winning and delivering great projects such as Kunming Airport in China, the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link between Germany and Denmark and the Second Avenue Subway in New York. While we are happy to have broken £1 billion, turnover is not a goal the firm strives to meet. We remain focused on the true metrics of success; employing fantastic people and delivering top quality projects for our clients and partners."

The Chairman also pointed out that the Group's unique employee ownership model and long-term strategy of diversifying across market sectors and geographies continued to show returns, helping to counteract economic difficulties in certain regions.

"We have faced challenges such as the resources downturn in Australia, for example, and some of our teams have been working in a very competitive environment as a result," said Philip Dilley. "At the same time, cashflow remains sound, our future order book is robust and we are employing more people to meet the global opportunities. Overall, I believe we have the strategy, skills and people to drive our performance over the coming year."

Arup is wholly owned in Trust for the benefit of its employees. This means no dividends are taken from the business by external shareholders. Instead, all staff members share directly in a profit distribution scheme so that each individual is incentivised to do their best for the firm as a whole. This year, the profit share allocation was raised to £30 million, up £8 million on the previous period.

Notes to Editors

1.       Arup is owned in Trust for the benefit of its employees past and present. The firm distributes earnings to its employees through a staff profit share scheme.

2.       During the year, Arup Group made direct charitable donations of £743,000. Staff members also contributed some 17,000 hours to various charities on a pro bono basis worth approximately £850,000.

About Arup

Arup is the creative force at the heart of many of the world's most prominent projects in the built environment and across industry. From more than 90 offices worldwide some 11,000 Arup planners, designers, engineers and consultants deliver innovative projects across the globe.
