AMALIE R. ROTHSCHILD:
Eyewitness to the 60's Rock Revolution
February 16 - March 6, 2009
Opening: Monday, February 16 at 7:30pm
Artist Lecture: Tuesday, February 17 at 7:30 pm
The SACI Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of photographs by Amalie R. Rothschild. Renowned photographer Amalie R. Rothschild was on the front lines of the 60's Rock Revolution. As the unofficial house photographer at New York's fabled Fillmore East rock venue, she was an eyewitness to the creative whirlwind that changed the face of society and popular culture in the 1960s and '70s. Camera in hand, she recorded landmark stage performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Santana, and many other giants of rock. But, as shown in the photographs in this exhibition, she also immortalized the fans, the intimate backstage moments, and the spectacular visual effects that also helped define the psychedelic generation. She herself worked for the Joshua Light Show, whose pulsating projected images formed a living backdrop to the beat. "There was much, much more to the Fillmore East experience than the music," Rothschild says. "From long-haired fans camped out to buy a ticket or grooving in the aisles, to anti-Viet Nam posters hung up in the lobby, there was a special atmosphere, like a happening. With the pictures I have chosen for this show I try to tell the onstage and offstage story hidden behind the curtain."
The SACI Gallery is open Monday – Friday 9:00am-7:00pm and Saturday 1:00-7:00pm.
