Why Trade Matters to the World's Farmers
Rome, Italy - The World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) actively participated in the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland from 1 – 3 October. During the WTO Public Forum, WFO co-organised two important events - one with WFO member Schweizer Bauernverband (Swiss Farmers' Union) on "Family Farming and Trade" and another with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on "Farmers' access to Trade".
WFO was present throughout the Public Forum together with all of its members. On behalf of the world's farmers WFO made a strong message to WTO management: "to move negotiations forward and translate ideas into practice. Thirteen years have passed since the first Doha round of negotiations of the WTO. It is now the time to achieve concrete results".
WFO also requested to meet with WTO decision-makers to discuss how to implement practical solutions to support the agricultural sector.
The Public Forum is the WTO's largest annual outreach event, which provides a platform for participants to discuss the latest developments in world trade and to propose ways of enhancing the multilateral trading system. The event regularly attracts over 1,500 representatives from civil society, academia, business, the media, governments, parliamentarians, and inter-governmental organisations. This year, the Public Forum told the human story behind trade. It showcased the myriad connections between trade and people's daily lives and demonstrates how trade improves the day-to-day lives of citizens around the globe. Under this thematic umbrella, three sub-themes were covered: trade and jobs - trade and consumers - trade and Africa. Participants also shared their views on the Doha Round roadmap.
The World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) is an international member-based organisation whose mandate is to bring together farmers' organisations and agricultural cooperatives from all over the world, representing the global community of farmers: small, medium, and large-scale. WFO includes 64 members from about 50 countries in the developed and emerging world with the objective to develop policies that favor and support farmers' around the world.
