| Call for Artists: BORDERLAND – The entropy of identities Nottingham (UK) 2013 International Video-Art screening Deadline: December 07, 2013 International ArtExpo is selecting all interesting video/short films to include in "BORDERLAND – The entropy of identities" international video art screening which will be held in Nottingham (UK), at Nottingham Playhouse, from the 13th to the 26th of January 2014. Entropy is conceptually defined as the measure of the level of disorder in a changing system. Starting from this fascinating concept, each person can be considered as a changing system, as the same as for a specific culture, city or country, until the whole universe. All these systems are subjected to a process of continuous inner evolution which overcome their own boundaries to contaminate and crossbreed each others. Borders of this evolving systems get more and more fleeting, and their identities turn out fluid, multiple and changeable. These continue changes find in the inevitability of evolution their measure of order. Nottingham Playhouse has been one of the United Kingdom's leading producing theatres since its foundation in 1948. Touring work nationally and internationally, the Playhouse remains firmly rooted in its vibrant home city, where its spacious modernist building – fronted by Anish Kapoor's "Sky Mirror" – is one of the region's most popular landmarks. Thanks to the programme "Digital Stage" curated by The Cutting Room innovative digital artworks have been brought to Nottingham Playhouse, offering an alternative viewpoint to Nottingham Playhouse's artistic programme. The deadline for applications is December 07, 2013. The event is open to video-art only. Sustainable development is possible even in complex contexts, but requires real and concrete commitment not only by the Institutions, but also and increasingly by the private sector.
This is the thought of J. D. Sachs, one of the world's leading experts on economic development and the fight against poverty. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs is creator of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations for the definition and implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and of the new Sustainable Development Goals.
Access to sustainable energy for all is an essential prerequisite to reach those goals of development on which the future, not only of the poor of the world, but of the global economic system, is based.
Indeed, energy is the driver for the opening of markets and the exchange of knowledge, the private initiative combined with a strong and far-sighted public intervention, and the creation of opportunities and technological innovation for the efficient management of environmental resources. Effective and concrete efforts in this direction by all social actors will not only help feed the Planet, but will ensure the well-being and growth for all.
The development of the African Continent is no exception. In a context of new balances between the North and South of the globe, energy for Africa will mean both satisfying the basic needs of its population – first of all access to food – and enhancing an enormous human, social and environmental potential for the whole world.

ITF and UITP unite with a vision to promote the development of public transport worldwide in the medium- and long-term
Brussels, December 3, 2013
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) today signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding in Brussels with the combined vision of promoting the development of high quality public transport globally.
Via the Memorandum of Understanding, ITF and UITP have agreed to work together to promote the development and expansion of public transport worldwide as a motor for sustainable growth and the creation of green jobs as well as environmental protection in reducing congestion and pollution.
ITF and UITP convene to work together to develop joint recommendations in vocational training, staff security and the promotion of formal (and the reduction of informal) employment in public transport. The two organisations also agree to represent the interests of public transport employers and workers in international organisations (eg. EU, ILO), to promote the high quality employment that public transport offers in urban areas.
"This is the first time we have signed such an agreement with an international trade union federation and it is therefore of great importance to UITP," noted UITP Secretary General, Alain Flausch. "Investing in public transport infrastructure and services creates direct jobs but is also a fantastic generator for wider business activity and indirect jobs for city economies".
ITF acting general secretary, Steve Cotton, commented: "This memorandum of understanding signals the opening of a new phase in our relationship with the UITP that is based on building fairer, more sustainable public transport worldwide. It recognises the importance of the UITP as a global body representing operators, employers and public authorities, and also of the vital role in public transport played by workers and their unions.
"This signing dedicates both bodies to the cause of public transport systems that are accessible, safe and good for all those who use and work on them. It also upholds the spirit of joint working and tripartism embodied by the ILO."

Die Internationale Transportarbeiter-Föderation (ITF) und der Internationale Verband für öffentliches Verkehrswesen (UITP) haben heute in Brüssel eine historische Gemeinsame Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet, der die gemeinsame Vision zugrunde liegt, den hochwertigen öffentlichen Personennahverkehr weltweit zu fördern.
ITF und UITP haben in der Gemeinsamen Absichtserklärung eine Zusammenarbeit vereinbart, um die Entwicklung und Ausweitung des öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs weltweit als Motor des nachhaltigen Wachstums, der Schaffung grüner Arbeitsplätze und des Umweltschutzes durch die Reduzierung von Staus und Umweltbelastungen zu fördern.
ITF und UITP vereinbaren eine Zusammenarbeit, um gemeinsame Empfehlungen für die Berufsausbildung, die Arbeitssicherheit und die Förderung der regulären Beschäftigung (und die Verringerung der Schwarzarbeit) im öffentlichen Personennahverkehr auszuarbeiten. Außerdem einigen sich beide Organisationen darauf, die Interessen von Arbeitgebern und Arbeitnehmern dieses Sektors in internationalen Organisationen (z.B. EU und IAO) zu vertreten, um hochwertige Arbeitsplätze, wie sie der öffentliche Personennahverkehr in städtischen Gebieten bietet, zu fördern.
„Dies ist das erste Mal, dass wir eine solche Vereinbarung mit einem internationalen Gewerkschaftsverband getroffen haben, und daher besitzt diese Vereinbarung eine besondere Bedeutung für den UITP", erklärte UITP-Generalsekretär Alain Flausch. „Investitionen in öffentliche Personennahverkehrsinfrastrukturen und -dienstleistungen schaffen direkte Arbeitsplätze, sind aber auch ein bedeutender Faktor für die Gesamtwirtschaft und die Schaffung indirekter Arbeitsplätze in städtischen Wirtschaftsräumen."
Steve Cotton, der amtierende Generalsekretär der ITF, sagte dazu: „Diese Absichtserklärung signalisiert den Beginn einer neuen Phase unserer Beziehung zum UITP, die darauf ausgerichtet ist, weltweit einen ausgewogeneren, nachhaltigeren öffentlichen Personennahverkehr aufzubauen. Sie würdigt die Bedeutung des UITP als globale Einrichtung, die Betreiber, Arbeitgeber und Behörden vertritt, und die entscheidende Rolle der Arbeitnehmer und ihrer Gewerkschaften für den öffentlichen Personennahverkehr."

La Fédération Internationale des Ouvriers du Transport (ITF) et l'Union internationale des transports publics (UITP) ont signé ce jour, à Bruxelles, un protocole d'accord historique intégrant une vision commune en faveur du développement, à l'échelle mondiale, d'un transport public de haute qualité.
Avec la signature de ce protocole d'accord, l'ITF et l'UITP ont accepté d'œuvrer ensemble afin de promouvoir le développement et l'expansion du transport public dans le monde en tant que moteur de la croissance durable, créateur d'emplois verts et protecteurde l'environnement grâce à la réduction de la congestion et de la pollution.
L'ITF et l'UITP ont décidé d'unir leurs forces afin d'élaborer des recommandations communes dans des domaines tels que la formation professionnelle, la sécurité du personnel, la promotion de l'emploi formel (et la diminution de l'emploi informel) dans le transport public. Les deux organisations acceptent également de représenter les intérêts des employeurs et des travailleurs du secteur auprès d'organisations internationales (telles que l'Union européenne ou l'Organisation internationale du Travail - OIT) afin de promouvoir les emplois de haute qualité qu'offre le transport public dans les zones urbaines.
«C'est la première fois que nous concluons un tel accord avec une fédération syndicale internationale, si bien que cette signature revêt pour l'UITP une importance particulière» a commenté le Secrétaire Général de l'UITP, M. Alain Flausch. «Les investissements dans les infrastructures et les services de transport public créent non seulement des emplois directs mais constituent également pour les économies urbaines une source extraordinaire d'emplois indirects et d'activités économiques plus larges».
Le Secrétaire Général par intérim de l'ITF, Steve Cotton, a déclaré: «Ce protocole d'accord marque le début d'une nouvelle phase dans notre relation avec l'UITP, tournée vers la construction d'un transport public plus équitable et durable dans le monde entier. Cet accord atteste, d'une part, de l'importance de l'UITP en tant qu'organisme mondial représentant les exploitants, les employeurs et les autorités publiques et, d'autre part, du rôle crucial que jouent dans le secteur du transport public les travailleurs et leurs représentations syndicales.
«Cette signature marque l'engagement des deux parties en faveur de systèmes de transport accessibles, sûrs et de qualité pour l'ensemble des utilisateurs et des travailleurs du secteur. Cet accord traduit également l'esprit de collaboration et le tripartisme incarnés par l'OIT».

La ITF y la UITP se unen para promover el desarrollo del transporte público en todo el mundo a medio-largo plazo

La Federación Internacional de los Trabajadores del Transporte (ITF) y la Unión Internacional de Transporte Público (UITP) han firmado hoy un memorándum de entendimiento histórico en Bruselas con la visión conjunta de promover el desarrollo de un transporte público de calidad a nivel mundial.
A través del memorándum de entendimiento, la ITF y la UITP han acordado colaborar para promover el desarrollo y la expansión del transporte público en todo el mundo como motor del crecimiento sostenible y de la creación de empleos verdes, así como de la protección medioambiental, al reducir la congestión y la contaminación.
La ITF y la UITP se reúnen para colaborar en el desarrollo de recomendaciones conjuntas en materia de formación profesional, seguridad del personal y promoción de un empleo formal (y reducción del informal) en el transporte público. Las dos organizaciones acuerdan representar los intereses de los empleadores y los trabajadores del transporte público en las organizaciones internacionales (como la UE y la OIT) para promover el empleo de calidad elevada que el transporte público ofrece en las zonas urbanas.
«Ésta es la primera vez que firmamos un acuerdo de este tipo con una federación internacional de sindicatos, por lo que es de suma importancia para la UITP», señaló Alain Flausch, Secretario General de la UITP. «Invertir en servicios e infraestructura de transporte público crea puestos de trabajo directos, aunque también es un generador fantástico de actividad comercial más amplia y de trabajo indirecto para las economías de las ciudades».
Steve Cotton, Secretario General en funciones de la ITF, comentó: «Este memorándum de entendimiento supone el inicio de una nueva fase en nuestra relación con la UITP, basada en la creación de un transporte público mundial más justo y sostenible. Reconoce la importancia de la UITP como organismo mundial representante de operadores, empleadores y autoridades públicas, y también el papel vital que desempeñan los trabajadores y sus sindicatos en el transporte público.

PlanetSolar awarded the 2013 European Solar Prize in the category « Media »
On 29 November 2013 in Berlin (Germany) the 2013 European Solar Prize, in the category « Media » was awarded to PlanetSolar for the media exposure generated on completion of the first trip around the world in a vessel powered only by solar energy (2010-2012). During the official ceremony awarding the prize, Raphaël Domjan, responsible for initiating the first curcumnavigation around the world powered on solar power, and Cordula Ströher, owner of the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, went on stage together, pleased that this eco-adventure is honoured once again.
Let us remind that on 4 May 2012, after 584 days at sea, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar completed the first trip around the world on solar power.
After leaving PlanetSolar in June 2012, Raphaël Domjan has been putting all his energies into the activities of the « Solar Planet » foundation. As for the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, she continues her solar missions around the world. In 2013, on behalf of science, the largest solar powered boat in the world led, jointly with the University of Geneva, a campaign to provide exclusive scientific measurements of the oceanic current of the Gulf Stream: « PlanetSolar Deep Water ». New missions are now in the course of being planned for 2014.

About PlanetSolar
MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, built in Kiel, Germany, is a catamaran powered exclusively by solar energy. On 4 May 2012, after 584 days of sailing, MS Tûranor PlanetSolar completed the first trip around the world powered by solar energy.
For its expeditions in 2013, the vessel underwent major maintenance. The most significant change was the optimization of the propulsion system, replacing the surface propellers with a fully immersed system. In addition, the crew of the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar comprised: Gérard d'Aboville (Captain) Brieuc Delbot (Second), Antoine Simon (electrical engineer), Hugo Buratti (sailor and steward) and Vincent Brunet (steward).
During the "PlanetSolar Deepwater" expedition, the scientific team from the University of Geneva completed the crew. Currently, the ship is docked at the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly (Lorient, France) for the winter, where it is occasionally open to the public.

Minesto wins international tidal energy award
[Gothenburg, Sweden, and London, UK, December 2, 2013.] Nordic marine energy technology leader Minesto has won the Industry Pioneer Award at the International Tidal Energy Summit in London. Minesto was awarded the prize for having proved that it is possible to harvest electricity from low velocity currents using the step-change Deep Green power plant.
Minesto won an Industry Pioneer Award for its marine power plant Deep Green, "the underwater kite". A quarter scale prototype of Deep Green is currently producing electricity in the waters off Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland. Deep Green is the only known marine power plant designed to produce electricity from low velocity tidal and ocean currents, and as such significantly expands the global marine energy potential.
Minesto received the award during the international conference on tidal energy, The International Tidal Energy Summit, which was held in London last week. Tidal Energy Awards were handed out in five categories, of which Minesto won the Industry Pioneer Award for "having created a pathway for other companies" in the tidal energy industry. The award winners were selected by an impartial panel of industry experts.
