Blog Action Day Wrap Up

The Wrap Up

The very first Blog Action Day was an unprecedented success and
we've got the final wrap up where the site used to be at
http://blogactionday.org complete with statistics, sample posts,
details of the huge amount of press coverage we had all over
the world, quotes and more.

It's a must see.  Please feel free to spread the word around as
it's great for people to really see what we achieved together.

******
Thanks

And if I could just say a huge thank you to every single one of
you, all 20,603 registered bloggers who took the plunge even if
it meant going off their regularly scheduled programming and
stood up to be counted.

Also thank you to everyone who helped out with the effort, in
particular Leo Babauta whose contacts, writing and enthusiasm
pushed the enterprise forward, my wife - Cyan Ta'eed who braved
the media and fronted up to interviews around the globe, John
Brougher who put together the superb video, Ryan Allen who
performed the elite coding to keep the site up despite barrages
of traffic and most importantly my Dad - Fuad Ta'eed who valiantly
looked through thousands of blogs to give the tick of approval,
every single day for two months.

So until next year when we get back together for
Blog Action Day 2008,

This is Collis signing off,
on behalf of the Blog Action Day team

FRANKFURT, Germany and SEOUL, Korea, September 14 /PRNewswire/ --     Reloaded Studios, a recently formed Korean game development company, today announce that they have entered into a licensing agreement with Crytek, the German developers of the highly anticipated upcoming release, Crysis, for use of the award winning CryENGINE 2 middleware to develop their new Action Strategy MMORPG.

"Our technology team carefully reviewed and analyzed both the features and limitations of all of the major game engines and middleware solutions which are currently available to license, before making our choice." says Ki-Yong Cho, Chief Executive Officer of Reloaded Studios. "No other engine came close to offering the dynamic features, developer friendly tools, or provided anything near the visual quality of the CryENGINE 2. We felt it was extremely important when our game is eventually released that it will still be able to stand apart from all other titles, either currently existing or presently in development, in what is now already a very competitive market. We felt only the CryENGINE 2 could support the dynamic content and massive landscapes we intend to build, let alone do justice to the unique art style we plan on bringing to our MMO. Licensing the CryENGINE 2 was an obvious and unanimous choice."

"We are really looking forward to working together with Reloaded Studios on this exciting new game development." said Faruk Yerli, managing director of Crytek, "The experienced team that Reloaded Studios has brought together will ensure they have the talent and resources to create a blockbuster hit with this title. When we saw the stunning concept visuals and exciting game design ideas they shared with us we immediately knew that what they have planned will be a true next-generation MMORPG, and become the kind of game which will set the visual and game play standards against which future MMO's will be judged."

EVENT HORIZON
 by CARLO BERNARDINI
supported by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Swing Space Program

5 Hanover Square, New York, NY
from Wednesday, September 19 to Sunday, September 30
Opening Reception Wednesday, September 19  6pm

Italian artist Carlo Bernardini inaugurates a new Swing Space at 5
Hanover Square with his installation "Event Horizon".  Working with a
unique system of fiber optics, Bernardini creates a shifting, illusory
network of illuminated lines that traverse the space in weblike
formations.  Viewers' processes of perception are challenged and
overturned as they enter the created environment, experiencing it from
within and without.
The title of this exhibit "Event Horizon" is inspired by the
astronomer's definition of the black holes' boundary line in the
cosmic space. Based on Bernardini's previous exhibits up to now, the
"permeable spaces" and their inner void, the viewer's processes of
perception of the black cosmic space and the "black holes" as "no
place", a "point of no return" become part of an experimental visual
challenge.
This life size installation consists of steel spheres of different
diameter, variously arranged and linked together by optic fibers. The
interaction of the spheres and optic fibers allow the light to become
the premier element for the visual language of this created
environment.
His is a form of creativity that works on the basis of a code of
modifications in space reflecting variants produced by light. So much
is confirmed by the present research of Carlo Bernardini, who handles
light and shade like materials and substances, using
electro-luminescent surfaces and optical fibers with internal lighting
in a context of total darkness.
In these works with interior and exterior environmental light
installations, the optical superimposition of lines traversing a space
and lines running along the planes of the same space, viewed from a
certain position, can produce two-dimensional visual conditions.
Closing one eye, transforming it into a single lens, the image becomes
two-dimensional; as soon as the viewpoint shifts volumetric changes
come about, generating mirror image-forms.
The first impression is not of the optical fibers themselves, but
rather of transparent plates of glass lit up along the sides.
The optical fibers only reveal the empty space they enclose in a
subsequent phase of perception.
The observer can enter into a sort of illusory space, experiencing the
installation from within and without.

CARLO BERNARDINI was born in Viterbo in 1966 and obtained his diploma
at the Fine Arts Academy in Rome in 1987. In 1997 he wrote the
theoretical essay on "The division of visual unity", which was
published by Stampa Alternativa. In 2000 and 2005 he received a grant

Coca Cola: Dangerous Diet Coke?

Behind the Label: Diet Coke
Far from being the healthy drink implied by its sports sponsorships, Diet Coke is a worrying cocktail of neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic chemicals
Il tuo browser potrebbe non supportare la visualizzazione di questa immagine.

   Author:Pat Thomas

Diet Coke was first introduced in the US in July 1982 and today it is the fourth most commonly consumed carbonated beverage in the world.

Apart from being the beverage of choice for sugar-phobic individuals the world over, Coca-Cola is one of the longest standing 'corporate partners' (since 1974) of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). In 1998 the company signed an unprecedented eight-year agreement to sponsor FIFA events – not just the prestigious World Cup, but also the Women's World Cup, the Confederation Cup, various youth championships and the upcoming World Cup Trophy Trip, a roadshow that will take the FIFA World Cup Trophy on tour to cities throughout the world.

Last year Coca-Cola extended its FIFA sponsorship commitment until 2022, a move that prompted the preposterous statement by company Chairman and CEO, E. Neville Isdell, that Coke's recommitment to the
world's most popular sport 'affords us a new opportunity to bring people closer together through football'.

It also helps them shift a lot of cans and bottles. A recent study by marketing information company ACNeilsen revealed that the Coca-Cola brand is the global leader among beverages, generating well over $15 billion in sales globally each year. Coke and Diet Coke each generate more than a billion dollars in sales yearly.

Five countries – the US, the UK, Germany, Canada and Brazil – guzzle more of this supposedly healthy, sugar-free alternative to regular Coke than anywhere else in the world.

Aggressive marketing like the FIFA sponsorship and clever jingles like 'Always Coca-Cola' keep Coke in our consciousness, but before you 'grab a Coke and a smile' at this year's main event, consider just what you are putting into your body. Although Diet Coke has a strong association with sport and health, it is actually a worrying mixture of neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic high intensity sweeteners (aspartame and acesulfame K), tooth and bone destroying acids (phosphoric acid) and DNA damaging colourings (sulphite ammonia caramel), as well as psychoaddictive caffeine and other undisclosed 'fl avourings'.

It also contains sodium benzoate, which can be broken down into the listed carcinogen benzene in the presence of strong acids, such as the citric acid found in this product.

Soda manufacturers have been aware of this synergistic possibility since the 1990s, but without pressure from regulatory authorities to change their formula to prevent the formation of benzene, have continued to mix benzoates and acids.

Ironically, the high fructose syrups used in regular drinks seem to slow this reaction down, and the formation of benzene appears to be most problematic in diet drinks.

 Ingredients

Purpose

Adverse Effects

 Aspartame

Sweetener

Breaks down easily in heat and during storage to its neurotoxic components phenylalanine, aspartic
acid and methyl alcohol. According to the FDA aspartame is associated with headaches, dizziness,
loss of balance, mood swings, nausea, memory loss, muscle weakness, blurred vision, fatigue,
weakness, skin rashes, joint and musculoskeletal pain. (For a full report on aspartame toxicity see the
Ecologist September 2005). The most recent evidence shows that aspartame ingested at levels that
are currently found in daily soft drink consumption raises the risk of otherwise rare brain tumours
known as lymphomas.

Acesulfame K

Sweetener

Causes cancer in animals. Acetoacetamide, a breakdown product, has been shown to affect the
thyroid gland in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Although it is commonly blended with aspartame to cover its bitter taste, there are no studies to show if the combination is safe or whether it produces other toxic by-products.

Phosphoric acid

 Acidifier

Can contribute to erosion of tooth enamel; leaches calcium from bones. Children with high intake of phosphoric acid suffer from brittle bones and a higher risk of fractures that follow them throughout life. Children consuming at least six glasses (1.5 litres) of phosphoric acid-containing soft drinks daily have more than five times the risk of developing low blood levels of calcium, compared to children who don't drink sodas.

 Citric acid

Preservative,
acidifier

On its own relatively harmless, though it can be harsh on tooth enamel. When mixed with potassium
or sodium benzoate (see below) during storage, and especially at raised temperatures, it can aid the
formation of carcinogenic benzene.

 Caffeine

 Flavouring

A stimulant, psychoactive compound that can provoke mood changes, lethargy and headache.
Caffeine is addictive and ingestion of high levels can cause miscarriage as well as contribute to peptic ulcers and heart ailments. At the levels added to soft drinks caffeine adds virtually no flavour but does, if consumed regularly, trigger caffeine addiction. Children consuming caffeine have higher incidences of illness, headaches, sleep problems and iron depletion. A 330ml bottle of cola contains
about half the caffeine of a cup of coffee.

Sodium Benzoate (E211)

Preservatives

People who suffer from asthma, rhinitis or urticaria may find their symptoms get worse following the consumption of benzoates. In acidic solutions (such as sodas), benzoates can break down into benzene, a known carcinogen. Surveys have shown that levels in soft drinks can be up to 40 times
higher than recognised 'safe' doses.

Sulphite ammonia
caramel (E150d)

Colouring

Made by heating sugar, ammonia and sulphite-containing compounds, the sugar can sometimes come from GM maize. Ammonia is toxic by all routes of exposure, and caramels made by an
ammonia process may damage genes, slow down growth, cause enlargement of the intestines and kidneys and may destroy vitamin B. This colouring has never been fully evaluated for its potential carcinogenicity or reproductive toxicity.

PARIS HILTON TELLS ATTORNEYS NOT TO APPEAL

10/06/2007

LOS ANGELES, June 10 /PRNewswire/ --

Paris Hilton today issued the following statement:

Today, I told my attorneys not to appeal the judge's decision. While I
greatly appreciate the Sheriff's concern for my health and welfare, I intend
to serve my time at L.A. County Jail.

Being in jail is by far the hardest thing I have ever done. During the
past several days, I have had a lot of time to think and I believe that I am
learning and growing from this experience. I have also had time to read the
mail from my fans. I very much appreciate all of their good wishes and hope
they will keep their letters coming. Thank you as well to my family who has
always stood by me. I love you and miss you so much!

I must also say that I was shocked to see all of the attention devoted to
the amount of time I would spend in jail for what I had done by the media,
public and city officials. I would hope going forward that the public and the
media will focus on more important things like the men and women serving our
country in Iraq and other places around the world.

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin

Turkey at the 52nd International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin represents Turkey at the 52nd International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with an installation titled Don't Complain.

Turkey's participation will take place in the Artiglierie section of the Arsenale. Sponsored by Garanti Bank, under the auspices of Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the contribution of Promotion Fund of the Turkish Prime Ministry, and supported by the Venice Biennial/Friends of the Turkish Pavilion, the exhibition is curated by Vasif Kortun and organised by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the organising body of the Istanbul Biennial.

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin
Alptekin's installation for Turkey's participation in the Venice Biennial is named "Don't Complain." This tautological title underscores an objection, and sets off suspicions about the probable meanings of such a grievance. Who is complaining when saying "don't complain?" Is it about the artist, the country, or the viewer?

The installation consists of a series of specific single-cell spaces in a semi-arched form. The inspiration for these comes out of a particular type of public dining in West Asia where restaurants may be tightly divided into separate cabins assembled around an open courtyard. Hence, each group of guests keeps to their privacy, and their unique mental setting.

In each cabin of the installation there will be a series image sequences on LCD screens. These are made of a layering of hundreds of single images, recordings of random and nonessential moments, anonymous myths that do not make it to history, and of fleeting acts that normally elude our attention. Alptekin calls them the "Incidents." In the "The Bombay Incident" on Juhu Tara Beach and The "Rio de Janeiro Incident" on Ipanema Beach differences are folded in to silhouettes of commonalty. In another incident, Alptekin traces a mute, black man over four seasons from the same vantage point; it is a register of the man's place on the corner of a street around a rubbish bin next to an abandoned car. He organizes the garbage in liaison with the street cleaners and inhabitants of the districts within the context of an informal economy, tolerated illegality, and auto-ecology. The deeply empathic assignation to the invisible under-belly of globalization, the cosmos of authorless, displa
ced presences, has as well to do with Alptekin's peripatetic livelihood, the "escape" from home and local context. His unabated rummaging around of other mental places provides him a specific knowledge and a working model.

The installation was prepared in Vaasa, Finland as part of the artist's Platform Vaasa residency with support from "Cheap Finnish Labour" project and BRG: Barn Research Group [Johan Ångerman, Peter Båsk, Camila Rocha, Cemali Marino, Hüseyin Alptekin].

Hüseyin Alptekin has participated in numerous exhibitions including the 4th (1995) and 9th (2005) International Istanbul Biennials; 24th São Paulo Biennial (1998); 4th Cetinje Biennial, Montenegro, (2004); Manifesta V; 47th October Salon: Art, Life and Confusion, Belgrade, 2006; and How Latitudes Become Forms, Walker Art Center (2003). Vasif Kortun is the director of Platform Garanti Art Center in Istanbul.

WIELS : OPENING AND INAUGURAL EXHIBITION

WIELS : Opening
First stage on the 26th – 28th of May

Wiels, the new Contemporary Arts Centre of Brussels, opens its doors on the weekend of the 26th–28th of May, 2007. Following its restoration, the remarkable corner building of the former Wielemans-Ceuppens breweries built by the modernist architect Adrien Blomme, now houses Wiels Contemporary Arts Centre. The first stage of this renovation concerns one exhibition floor and the brew hall.

The creation of Wiels meets an old need: a center with an international vocation specializing in contemporary art finally opens in Brussels!

Thanks to a broad range of activities and services, Wiels will create an open and dynamic context, ideal for the discovery and understanding of contemporary art. The three exhibition floors of a total surface of 1.800 m2 will accommodate six annual large scale exhibitions. The back wing will house nine artists in residence as well as education, training and community-based programs. Social commitment, essential to share the stakes of contemporary art with every public, will be carried through an innovative program of mediation, training and professional development.

A large program of complementary activities will complete the activities of Wiels: a cinema, conferences, festivals and concerts. The brewery hall, will serve as a convivial lobby, which will host a café-restaurant and a bookshop. Finally, the panoramic rooftop terrace will offer a unique viewpoint over Brussels.

The renovation was financed by the Brussels-Capital Region ("Monuments and Sites" and special investment credits), the European structural funds Urban II and the District of Forest/Vorst, along with private sponsors and donors. For its operations, Wiels is supported by the Flemish Community structural subsidies and the French Community punctual subsidies, the VGC and the COCOF, as well as the Bernheim Foundation, the Evens Foundation, Puilaetco Private Bankers, Leon Eeckman SA and Duvel Moortgat.

Inaugural exhibition: Expats/Clandestines
26th of May – 5th of August 2007

This exhibition, scheduled for the opening of Wiels, will explore the question of plural identities, which are formed beyond national borders and lines of demarcation, whether they are real or imaginary. Addressing the obvious duality between expats and clandestines as a starting point, this exhibition will focus on the phenomena of complex biographies and on the tremendous cultural mix, visibility and anonymity, presence and absence, and on the work of contemporary artists in the swirl of migration.
With Francis Alÿs, Saâdane Afif, André Cadere, Nairy Baghramian, Gabriel Kuri, Moshekwa Langa, Chen Zhen

Marcel Berlanger, Tore

On the second floor of Wiels, Marcel Berlanger presents a "theatrical" installation of 7 large paintings modulated by a light show designed by Julie Petit-Etienne. A unique visual and fascinating experience.

Short films commissioned for the opening of Wiels

Ann Veronica Janssens, Eclipse

COMSCORE: Germans Represent a Substantial Proportion of Second Life Residents

LONDON, May 4 /PRNewswire/ --

- Germans Represent a Substantial Proportion of Second Life Residents

comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, today released a
comprehensive worldwide analysis of the active users of Second Life, the 3-D
virtual world that is entirely built and owned by its "residents." The study
revealed that approximately 1.3 million people ran the official software and
logged-in to Second Life in March 2007. This represents an increase of 46
percent in the number of active residents from January 2007.

In March, 61 percent of active Second Life residents were from Europe,
compared to 19 percent from North America, and 13 percent from Asia Pacific.
In addition, 61 percent of residents were male while 39 percent were female.

(iii) N/A - Residents in January below minimum reporting standard

"The phenomenal growth of Second Life continues, and its presence is
being felt around the world," said Bob Ivins, Managing Director of comScore
Europe. "With nearly 800,000 active residents in Europe, Second Life is
proving to be popular on an international scale. It's especially fascinating
to note that the number of active German residents exceeds the number of
active residents in the entire U.S. It is little wonder that bricks and
mortar businesses are seeing Second Life as a virtual-world way of accessing
a global, real-world customer base."

In addition to the resident activity cited above, comScore found that the
Secondlife.com website was visited by 3.6 million worldwide visitors aged 15
and older during March, up 17 percent from February and an increase of 46
percent over January. The strong visitor growth to Secondlife.com indicates
continuing and potential future growth in Second Life residents, since the
software application used to access the Second Life world is only available
from this site.

SUCCESSFUL HUMAN CLINICAL TRIAL OF CHRONO THERAPEUTICS

04/05/2007

BASEL, Switzerland and TRENTON, New Jersey, May 4 /PRNewswire/ --

- Trial Convincingly Proves Functionality in Humans of CTI's
Programmable, Pulsatile, Passive Transdermal Drug Delivery Device -
ChronoDose(TM)

Chrono Therapeutics Inc. (CTI) announced today the successful completion
of its first phase human clinical trial of its programmable, pulsatile,
passive transdermal drug/device combination product: ChronoDose(TM). CTI
intends to publish this clinical data in leading scientific and medical
journals by year end.

CLINICAL STUDY DESIGN

The trial was conducted between February and April 2007 at the University
Hospital Basel, Switzerland, Division of Clinical Pharmacology and
Toxicology. Georgios Imanidis, PhD, of the University of Basel was the
Principal Investigator on behalf of CTI.

This study was an open, randomized, three period, single-center,
dose-escalation study. Thirty-six independent human transdermal tests were
conducted on male volunteers using wristwatch-like ChronoDose(TM) devices.
The trial successfully proved the efficacy of the device on human subjects
using its model drug compound. The dose escalation trial showed statistically
significant modulation and control of the dosing profiles. Using low, medium
and high concentrations, for 16 hours, the model drug permeated each
subject's skin on multiple occasions, resulting in clear and distinct peaks
and troughs of therapeutically effective and well-targeted blood plasma
concentration levels. A non-compartmental and compartmental model based
analysis of pharmacokinetics will be utilized. Local and systemic
tolerability of the model drug after its transdermal administration was
better than planned.

Dr. Georgios Imanidis commented, "CTI has for the first time in
transdermal drug delivery history successfully completed a significant human
trial with a passive, automated and programmable multiple dosing transdermal
device system. We are extremely pleased with the excellent results".

Guy DiPierro, CEO and President of CTI noted, "This solid and convincing
clinical data along with initial human data generated last summer will help
us to rapidly commercialize our initial drug product. We are particularly
pleased that ChronoDose(TM) produced targeted blood plasma concentrations as
accurately as it did and at the intended time periods."

The Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci is pleased to present Islanders 2003-2006, the first solo show in Italy of the Russian photographer Anastasia Khoroshilova.

A selection of 27 works, from four different series, will be displayed as a special project in the Theatre Room.

The young Russians photographed by Khoroshilova in their surroundings (rooms, corridors, gyms) or against neutral backgrounds (anonymous interiors, gardens) are automatically transposed to a general level of abstraction. The 'meetings' Khoroshilova set up, on her trips to Russia during and after her years studying at Duisburg/Essen University, have a documentary objectivity: the essential characteristics of samples of subjects in spontaneous poses that are never pre-established, facing the camera.

Khoroshilova's portraits are immediately recognisable on account of the uniform: trainee dancers at the State Academy of Choreography (2003), young fighters at the gym Sambo 70 (2005) or young women in military uniform of 9.5% Plus (2005). They are members of institutions/symbols that echo a recent past of glorious achievement, success and power, now reduced to the role of Islanders, whose individual life begins where their collective identity ends; their identity is inexhorably fixed, as in photography, in the present. Not knowing anything about their personal lives, nor what their future holds, they appear to us to be clinging to the certainty of belonging, to the protection of the group and of history.

In the portraits of the last series Toys (2006) uniform is flanked by the presence of toys or games which reveal the simple child-like side of the subjects. The playful dimension on which the portraits draw, without the photographer suggesting as much, is the only possibility that the subjects possess to construct an identity, to be themselves.

In the private relationship with her subject, Khoroshilova records the person in front of her lens without passing judgment of any kind or resorting to lyricism or sentimentality. It is rather that her photographs tend to reveal the paradox that the subject of her portraits coincides with the 'function' or the place in which they are set, but behind this lies hidden great humanity suffused with emotions, needs, desires, fears, suffering and hope. There is no evidence of all this in the photography, only a latent evocation.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue (Italian/English) with essay by the curator, Stefano Pezzato. Published by Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci.

Anastasia Khoroshilova, born in 1978 in Moscow, actually lives in Cologne.
Member in "The Russian Union of Art Photographers" since 1997, she graduated at the Photographic Department - University Duisburg/Essen.
She had solo shows at Ernst Hilger Gallery, Vienna; Fucares Gallery, Madrid; Museum Sacharov-Center, Moscow; Bumpodo Gallery, Tokyo; Klementinum, Prague; Corkin Shopland Gallery, Toronto; The State Russian Museum (Marble Palace), St. Petersburg.

SUNRISE IN FRANKFURT (ODER)

13/04/2007

FRANKFURT, Germany, April 13 /PRNewswire/ --

- Frankfurt's First Solar-Cell Plant due to Start Production on 19
April

On 19 April 2007, Odersun AG will be opening "Sun One", its
first solar-cell plant in Frankfurt (Oder). Wolfgang Tiefensee, Federal
Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs and Government
Commissioner for the New Federal States, will be opening the "Sun One" plant
at Im Technologiepark 7 together with Brandenburg's Minister President,
Matthias Platzeck, at 3.30 pm in the presence of invited guests, before
taking a tour of the plant and learning about the production of thin film
solar modules.

Up to 60 employees will soon be working in four shifts to
produce around 6,000 kilometres of solar tapes annually at the "Sun One"
plant. This corresponds to the distance Brandenburg - New York. The thin film
solar modules on copper tape can be produced for use in cells of all sizes
and quality for façades and roofs, solar power stations and designer bags
with an integrated "power socket" without requiring special complicated and
expensive silicon technology.

Odersun AG's thin film solar technology has been developed
entirely in Frankfurt (Oder) over the past 14 years. "We are a real
Brandenburg success story", Ramin Lavae Mokhtari, CCE of Odersun AG boasts.
"With our patented, globally innovative technology and our flexible
production process we offer tailor-made, economic solutions."

Up to now, Odersun AG has invested 8.5 million euros in the
project. The main equity providers are Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures
from London and AT&M - Advanced Technology and Materials from Peking. The
state of Brandenburg is assisting Odersun AG with 3.5 million euros financial
aid.
