Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin represents Turkey at the 52nd International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with an installation titled Don't Complain.

Turkey's participation will take place in the Artiglierie section of the Arsenale. Sponsored by Garanti Bank, under the auspices of Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the contribution of Promotion Fund of the Turkish Prime Ministry, and supported by the Venice Biennial/Friends of the Turkish Pavilion, the exhibition is curated by Vasif Kortun and organised by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the organising body of the Istanbul Biennial.

Alptekin's installation for Turkey's participation in the Venice Biennial is named "Don't Complain." This tautological title underscores an objection, and sets off suspicions about the probable meanings of such a grievance. Who is complaining when saying "don't complain?" Is it about the artist, the country, or the viewer?

The installation consists of a series of specific single-cell spaces in a semi-arched form. The inspiration for these comes out of a particular type of public dining in West Asia where restaurants may be tightly divided into separate cabins assembled around an open courtyard. Hence, each group of guests keeps to their privacy, and their unique mental setting.

In each cabin of the installation there will be a series image sequences on LCD screens. These are made of a layering of hundreds of single images, recordings of random and nonessential moments, anonymous myths that do not make it to history, and of fleeting acts that normally elude our attention. Alptekin calls them the "Incidents." In the "The Bombay Incident" on Juhu Tara Beach and The "Rio de Janeiro Incident" on Ipanema Beach differences are folded in to silhouettes of commonalty. In another incident, Alptekin traces a mute, black man over four seasons from the same vantage point; it is a register of the man's place on the corner of a street around a rubbish bin next to an abandoned car. He organizes the garbage in liaison with the street cleaners and inhabitants of the districts within the context of an informal economy, tolerated illegality, and auto-ecology. The deeply empathic assignation to the invisible under-belly of globalization, the cosmos of authorless, displa
ced presences, has as well to do with Alptekin's peripatetic livelihood, the "escape" from home and local context. His unabated rummaging around of other mental places provides him a specific knowledge and a working model.

The installation was prepared in Vaasa, Finland as part of the artist's Platform Vaasa residency with support from "Cheap Finnish Labour" project and BRG: Barn Research Group [Johan Ångerman, Peter Båsk, Camila Rocha, Cemali Marino, Hüseyin Alptekin].

Hüseyin Alptekin has participated in numerous exhibitions including the 4th (1995) and 9th (2005) International Istanbul Biennials; 24th São Paulo Biennial (1998); 4th Cetinje Biennial, Montenegro, (2004); Manifesta V; 47th October Salon: Art, Life and Confusion, Belgrade, 2006; and How Latitudes Become Forms, Walker Art Center (2003). Vasif Kortun is the director of Platform Garanti Art Center in Istanbul.

The Award

The Italian Cultural Office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, next host of the European Biennal Manifesta, is announcing the first edition of the international competition Best Art Practices – International award for young curators.

Best Art Practices will assign prizes to the best curator practices of contemporary art of the last five years. The theme of the first edition will focus on projects in non-conventional spaces.

The Award accepts only projects that have been completed in the last five years and therefore inaugurated after 1 March 2002. Itinerant events or events taking place over a period of time will be accepted as long as all the phases are concluded by 1 March 2007. The Award is open to all curators of all nationalities born on or after 2 March 1967.

Entries must arrive by 12 midday of Monday 3rd September 2007 by post, courier or hand delivery at the Award secretary's office. The postmark will not be considered as proof for the date of arrival of the entry and data sent by email or other means of transmission different from those indicated above will not be accepted.

First stage on the 26th – 28th of May

Wiels, the new Contemporary Arts Centre of Brussels, opens its doors on the weekend of the 26th–28th of May, 2007. Following its restoration, the remarkable corner building of the former Wielemans-Ceuppens breweries built by the modernist architect Adrien Blomme, now houses Wiels Contemporary Arts Centre. The first stage of this renovation concerns one exhibition floor and the brew hall.

The creation of Wiels meets an old need: a center with an international vocation specializing in contemporary art finally opens in Brussels!

Thanks to a broad range of activities and services, Wiels will create an open and dynamic context, ideal for the discovery and understanding of contemporary art. The three exhibition floors of a total surface of 1.800 m2 will accommodate six annual large scale exhibitions. The back wing will house nine artists in residence as well as education, training and community-based programs. Social commitment, essential to share the stakes of contemporary art with every public, will be carried through an innovative program of mediation, training and professional development.

A large program of complementary activities will complete the activities of Wiels: a cinema, conferences, festivals and concerts. The brewery hall, will serve as a convivial lobby, which will host a café-restaurant and a bookshop. Finally, the panoramic rooftop terrace will offer a unique viewpoint over Brussels.

The renovation was financed by the Brussels-Capital Region ("Monuments and Sites" and special investment credits), the European structural funds Urban II and the District of Forest/Vorst, along with private sponsors and donors. For its operations, Wiels is supported by the Flemish Community structural subsidies and the French Community punctual subsidies, the VGC and the COCOF, as well as the Bernheim Foundation, the Evens Foundation, Puilaetco Private Bankers, Leon Eeckman SA and Duvel Moortgat.


Inaugural exhibition: Expats/Clandestines
26th of May – 5th of August 2007

This exhibition, scheduled for the opening of Wiels, will explore the question of plural identities, which are formed beyond national borders and lines of demarcation, whether they are real or imaginary. Addressing the obvious duality between expats and clandestines as a starting point, this exhibition will focus on the phenomena of complex biographies and on the tremendous cultural mix, visibility and anonymity, presence and absence, and on the work of contemporary artists in the swirl of migration.

comprehensive worldwide analysis of the active users of Second Life, the 3-D
virtual world that is entirely built and owned by its "residents." The study
revealed that approximately 1.3 million people ran the official software and
logged-in to Second Life in March 2007. This represents an increase of 46
percent in the number of active residents from January 2007.


In March, 61 percent of active Second Life residents were from Europe,
compared to 19 percent from North America, and 13 percent from Asia Pacific.
In addition, 61 percent of residents were male while 39 percent were female.

SUCCESSFUL HUMAN CLINICAL TRIAL OF CHRONO THERAPEUTICS

Programmable, Pulsatile, Passive Transdermal Drug Delivery Device -
ChronoDose(TM)


Chrono Therapeutics Inc. (CTI) announced today the successful completion
of its first phase human clinical trial of its programmable, pulsatile,
passive transdermal drug/device combination product: ChronoDose(TM). CTI
intends to publish this clinical data in leading scientific and medical
journals by year end.


CLINICAL STUDY DESIGN


The trial was conducted between February and April 2007 at the University
Hospital Basel, Switzerland, Division of Clinical Pharmacology and
Toxicology. Georgios Imanidis, PhD, of the University of Basel was the
Principal Investigator on behalf of CTI.


This study was an open, randomized, three period, single-center,
dose-escalation study. Thirty-six independent human transdermal tests were
conducted on male volunteers using wristwatch-like ChronoDose(TM) devices.
The trial successfully proved the efficacy of the device on human subjects
using its model drug compound. The dose escalation trial showed statistically
significant modulation and control of the dosing profiles. Using low, medium
and high concentrations, for 16 hours, the model drug permeated each
subject's skin on multiple occasions, resulting in clear and distinct peaks
and troughs of therapeutically effective and well-targeted blood plasma
concentration levels. A non-compartmental and compartmental model based
analysis of pharmacokinetics will be utilized. Local and systemic
tolerability of the model drug after its transdermal administration was
better than planned.


Dr. Georgios Imanidis commented, "CTI has for the first time in

trial with a passive, automated and programmable multiple dosing transdermal
