Less Dough, More Pizza

Two thirds of Brits have cut down the amount they spend dining out

Pizza restaurants have never been more popular, despite recession-hit Brits slashing the amount they spend on dining out.

Recent research* commissioned by VoucherCodes.co.uk, suggests nearly two thirds (61 per cent) of consumers have reduced the amount of money they spend when eating out over the last 12 months. However, despite this tightening of belts across the country, pizza seems to be one treat Brits are unwilling to give up, with millions heading online to download record numbers of restaurant vouchers.

Analysis from VoucherCodes.co.uk reveals pizza vouchers are amongst the most popular offers on the site, with one downloaded every five seconds by UK consumers - a figure that has jumped by 251 per cent over the last three years. In fact, the site has seen over six million pizza and Italian restaurant vouchers downloaded over the past twelve months alone.

This equates to the UK downloading:

500,000 pizza vouchers a month

16,400 pizza vouchers a day

One pizza voucher every 5 seconds

This huge rise in demand for Italian food is not only great news for UK restaurants, but also for consumers. The majority of leading chains are in buoyant health despite the challenging economic climate and many are offering great deals as they battle for consumers' hard earned cash.

Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk says: "Pizza vouchers were one of the original money-off deals and are still hugely popular today, with millions using them to make their money go further. Italian food is quick, accessible and relatively cheap so it's no surprise to see it growing in popularity at a time when consumer finances are severely stretched. It's great to see so many people defying the downturn. It just goes to show that although times are tough for consumers, checking online for deals and discounts really can boost their spending power and allow them to enjoy the things they love."
