Women gather in New Delhi to set rights agenda

Over 220 women from 80 countries across the world will gather in New Delhi, India, on 27-28 January for a conference organised by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF). During the two day event, they will examine the issues facing women workers and help determine the organisation's strategy for the next four years.

The conference is being held at the Hotel Pullman Gurgaon Central Park, MG Road, Sector 26, Gurgaon. Press are invited to attend the opening ceremony on 27th January from 09.00 to 10.00. Among the guest speakers at the ceremony will be Indira Jaising, additional solicitor general of India, who will deliver the keynote address.

The conference will close on Tuesday 28 January with delegates staging a rally in protest against violence against women from 16:00 to 18:30, setting off from the Railway Officers Club to the All India Railwaymen's Federation Office located at State Entry Road, Connaught Place, New Delhi.

Delegates and everyone interested in the ITF women's conference are supported by a dedicated website www.itfwomen2014.org which allows everyone to follow the debates and have their say. The conference's decisions are fed into the four yearly ITF congress being held in Bulgaria in August this year, which decides the ITF's global priorities up to 2018.

ITF women transport workers' coordinator Alison McGarry commented: "This is a major event that recognises the increasing numbers of women working in the transport sector and in trade unions, and the problems they are facing – from austerity to the denial of women's and workers' rights, and the daily threat of violence. During our time here we will be setting out agendas to fight prejudice, inequality and victimisation, and laying out how trade unions can combat them on everyone's behalf."
