Krystian "Truth" Czaplicki, Gdańsk 2014, photo: Paweł Jóźwiak Krystian "Truth" Czaplicki in the Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk 19 July - 19 October 2014 The Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk is a long-term, international project realized by Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art aiming to create a permanent collection of works of art in public space in the area of the Lower Town district of Gdansk. Projects assigned for realisation are chosen by a jury in regularly announced, closed, international competitions. Each year Laznia CCA invites also young but prominent contemporary artists to create temporary public interventions that are complementary to the permanent competition pieces and artistic actions realized within the project. This time we have chosen Krystian "Truth" Czaplicki a prolific young artist whose realizations in public space clearly differ from the omnipresent Polish street-art. His subtle artworks blend in with the surrounding as by the osmosis, and they become its natural element. They never dominate, never "shout" just settle into their new environment and engage in a mutual dialog. Moreover, their characteristic trait is a strong intellectual layer, a notion of aesthetic value and a sense of pure-nonsense humour. When Krystian visited the Lower Town he was captivated by the green area of the 17th century bastions and the canals surrounding the district. He observed local citizens engaging in such leisure time activities as fishing (sometimes using homemade fishing rods) or kayaking. The installation he created refers to the specifics of this place and pays homage to its dwellers it is a mysterious water sign resembling a strange DIY fishing device (a cross between a rod and a landing net with a centerpin). The sculpture will stay in the waters of the canal till mid October 2014. It is expected that within this period the artwork can transform due to weather conditions or public interaction. It can either assimilate with the environment or get disintegrated or damaged. It may also became a beacon for general public inviting them to focus on the exceptional green areas of the Lower Town. Project realized within the framework of THE OUTDOOR GALLERY OF THE CITY OF GDANSK project supported by The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
