Comienza hoy en Panamá la reunión sindical internacional
La federación global sindical de los trabajadores del transporte en el mundo inicia hoy su reunión de alto nivel en Panamá. La ITF (Federación Internacional de los Trabajadores del Transporte) ha elegido este país como sede en reconocimiento a su condición como importante hub del transporte global y por ser un elemento clave en la elaboración de los futuros planes de trabajo de esta organización internacional.
El evento reúne a los representantes de su Comité Ejecutivo de todo el mundo, el cual se llevará a cabo el día de hoy y mañana en el Riu Plaza Hotel, Ciudad de Panamá.
El Presidente de la ITF, Paddy Crumlin, comentó: "Panamá es un elemento clave para nosotros y es donde hay un importante programa de desarrollo sindical junto con nuestros afiliados del país. Este proyecto tiene como prioridad apoyar a los(as) trabajadores(as) del transporte de Panamá y aprender con sus experiencias. Es también una importante nación de alto crecimiento que forma parte del paisaje cambiante de los padrones de distribución global, es aquí en donde se deben y serán escuchadas las voces de los(as) trabajadores(as)".
El Sr. Crumlin agregó: "Las ciudades logísticas como Panamá tienen una enorme importancia para la industria del transporte. Panamá se está convirtiendo en uno de los principales hubs del mundo y la ITF está movilizando a sus trabajadores(as) a través de estrategias para obtener su reconocimiento y crear los lazos de solidaridad internacional que este estatus merece".
Steve Cotton, Secretario General de la ITF, comentó: "Nuestro trabajo para apoyar a nuestros(as) compañeros(as) que trabajan en el Canal de Panamá es muy conocido (vea https://goo.gl/iAm7tB y https://goo.gl/OEsbfU) y se está estrechando la coordinación del trabajo conjunto con los trabajadores del sector marítimo de Panamá, con los(as) trabajadores(as) de puerto (quienes son testigos de los planes de aumentar la automatización a través de una nueva concesión), con los trabajadores(as) del aeropuerto, de logística y con los trabajadores(as) del transporte público. Todos(as) ellos(as) son una parte vital de los esfuerzos para construir el poder sindical que los(as) trabajadores(as) merecen, y también para representar mejor a los(as) trabajadores(as) que laboran fuera del país en todas las multinacionales y empresas regionales que tienen su base aquí."
Y concluyó: "Los(as) trabajadores(as) del transporte panameños están enfrentando desafíos, pero no están solos. Este país es un lugar interesante, con un futuro prometedor. Juntos tenemos la intención de asegurar que este futuro funcione para todos(as) ".
El Comité Ejecutivo de la ITF es el órgano de toma de decisiones de alto nivel de la Federación, y se lleva a cabo entre sus congresos que son cada cuatro años. En este evento se informará sobre el trabajo de los sindicatos del transporte en el mundo, sus preocupaciones y sus desafíos, formulándose estrategias y métodos para hacerles frente.

World union meeting commences today in Panama
The global union federation for the world's transport workers begins a top-level meeting in Panama today. The ITF (International Transport Workers' Federation) has chosen the country as venue for the meeting in recognition of the nation's status as a key global transport hub and component of the Federation's plans for building the future of work.
The ITF meeting brings together the organisation's governing executive board from around the globe, and takes place at the Riu Plaza Hotel, Panama City, today and tomorrow.
ITF president Paddy Crumlin explained: "Panama is a key focus for us, and site of a major union-building programme in concert with our Panamanian member unions. This priority project aims to support the transport workers of Panama, and learn from their experiences. The nation is also an important high growth country, part of a changing landscape of global trading patterns in which the voices of workers must and will be heard."
Mr Crumlin continued: "Logistics city states such as Panama have enormous importance for the transport industry. Panama is becoming one of the world's key hubs and the ITF is responding to this by helping mobilise its strategic workers to gain the recognition and forge the international links of solidarity that that new status deserves."
ITF general secretary Steve Cotton added "Our work to support our colleagues working on the Panama Canal is well known (see https://goo.gl/B873rland https://goo.gl/xWyAvO) and it is increasingly closely coordinated with similar work alongside Panama's other maritime workers, its dockers – who are witnessing plans for increased automation via new concession – airport, logistics and public transport workers. They are all a vital part of the effort to build the union power that those workers merit, and to best represent workers outside the country too in all those multinationals and regional companies that have a base here.
He concluded: "Panamanian transport workers face challenges, but they do not face them alone. This country is an exciting place, with an exciting future. Together we intend to ensure that that future works for all."
The ITF executive board is the organisation's senior decision making body, which governs it between its four yearly congresses. At this event it will hear reports on its unions' work, concerns and challenges worldwide, and formulate the strategies and tactics to address them.
