ITF official arrested for investigating ATC problems in Dominican Republic is released

Antonio Fritz, who was arrested this morning in the Dominican Republic during a fact finding mission to investigate air traffic control problems there, has now been released.

 

He stated: "After seven hours in custody, and being asked why a foreigner is supporting Dominican Republic air traffic controllers, I have been released without charge. None of the police officers was able to explain the reasons for the arrest, since clearly no law had been broken. This has been a valuable lesson: these same tactics are being used regularly to intimidate the member of the Dominican Air Traffic Controllers Association (ADCA) – who are now prohibited from even writing reports about incidents in the country's airspace. Twenty eight members, including the union's leaders have been sacked, and there have been many of these arrests without charges."

 

"I'd like to thank the national trade union centres, and national and international trade unionists for their support. The ADCA will not be silenced. This arrest stopped me from addressing a press conference on the ATC situation today. I'm glad to say that the event will now go ahead tomorrow."

Secretario de la ITF arrestado por investigar los problemas de Control Aéreo en República Dominicana es liberado

Antonio Fritz, quien fue detenido esta mañana en la República Dominicana durante una misión para determinar los hechos a investigar en los problemas de control de tráfico aéreo, ha sido puesto en libertad.

 

Afirmó: " Después de siete horas bajo custodia, y de haber sido interrogado sobre el por qué un extranjero está apoyando a los controladores aéreos en República Dominicana, he sido liberado sin cargos. Ninguno de los oficiales de policía fue capaz de explicar los motivos de la detención, ya que claramente no hay violación a la ley. Esta ha sido una valiosa lección: estas mismas tácticas se utilizan regularmente para intimidar a los miembros de la Asociación Dominicana de Controladores de Tránsito Aéreo - que ahora tienen prohibido incluso la redacción de informes sobre incidentes en el espacio aéreo del país ".

 

"Me gustaría dar las gracias a los centrales sindicales nacionales, y sindicalistas nacionales e internacionales por su apoyo. El ADCA no será silenciada. Esta detención me impidió abordar una conferencia de prensa sobre la situación ATC hoy. Me alegro confirmar que la conferencia seguirá adelante mañana".

 

Antonio Fritz va a dar mañana la conferencia de prensa a la que se le impidió asistir.
