Folded Light Art + Design | Cotton Paper Lights

With a mathematically complex design and a very high level of craftsmanship, Jiangmei Wu's unique, sensuous lights illuminate a room through amazingly complex and original forms that reinvent the role of lighting in interior design. Each lights is made of pieces of digitally-cut and hand-folded high quality paper, illuminated by a custom LED light, providing a soft ambience that highlights the intricacy and the mathematical complexity of the piece. By using original origami folding compositions developed by Wu, each light shade can be unfolded into flat pieces of paper. Once folded, the paper structures are self-supportive and don't require additional materials to hold them up. Aesthetic and practical, art and science, Wu's works are unique in their feeling, thought, and craftsmanship.

Currently on the faculty in the Interior Design department at Indiana University, Wu is trained in and has practiced design across a wide range of disciplines: interior design, graphic design, interaction design, architecture and urban design. Through the use of different scales, media, and technologies, Wu is interested in understanding how elements of design, material applications, as well as construction techniques, influence one another and together transcend boundaries between the different disciplines. She believes that the interaction between different experiences enriches the mind and encourages one to search for a plurality of meanings in design.

Recently Wu has been investigating the tectonic relationship between form/space, surface texture, and poetic expression of construction through origami and computer-aided design, as well as sustainable design through the use of recycled materials and energy efficient technologies. "The folded Light Art project was initiated because of my passion for paper folding. First I experimented with paper with smaller sizes and simple patterns. Paper pieces were then grafted together to create more complex design". The result is a series of paper folded lighting art and fixtures that are made from recycled cotton paper and LED lights.
