Arup Reveals its Vision for Cities of the Future

Arup Reveals its Vision for Cities of the Future

Greener environments, glow in the dark trees and urban wetlands to dominate city landscapes

A new report by Arup, the engineering and design consultancy behind the ‘Garden Bridge’ in London and a new smart cities project in Christchurch, New Zealand, has revealed how our cities around the world will change in response to climate change, resource scarcity and increasing urban flooding.

Developed by Arup’s Foresight + Research + Innovation and Landscape Architecture teams, ‘Cities Alive’ predicts that technology and nature will work together seamlessly to create cities that are an integrated network of intelligent green spaces. Buildings may be transformed into vertical urban farms, while glow in the dark trees, solar powered pathways and urban wetlands and forests will become common features, crucial for our adaptation to climate change and avoidance of urban flooding.

Greener urban environments

The report also looks at the importance of creating higher quality public places and greener urban environments through high quality landscape design in order to protect our cities from flooding and increase the health and wellbeing of citizens. With sea levels and temperatures rising, inadaptable or poorly designed urban environments will suffer the most from these changes. Arup’s report outlines the need to shift from structural defenses to more natural solutions to protect our cities including replacing impermeable concrete, tarmac or roofed areas with more permeable surfaces such as reed beds and other wetland habitats. Increasing tree cover within urban areas can also reduce flood risk, with one study estimating that for every 5% increase in tree cover area, run-off is reduced by 2%[1].

The report also highlights the benefits that additional green spaces will provide in terms of increasing our health and wellbeing including:

  • Increasing life expectancy by up to five years. People perceive distance to be shorter in greener areas and are therefore more likely to walk
  • Helping people recover faster from illness, reducing the cost of healthcare
  • Reducing the number of sick days - people who work in buildings that can see green space take almost a quarter less time off work than those who can’t[2].

Urban farms and foraging

With the critical issue of feeding growing urban populations, Arup predicts that food production will take place within city buildings, with purpose-built vertical farms soon becoming a regular feature in cities. These urban farms will also play a role in reconnecting city dwellers with nature, teaching citizens about home-grown food and offering a glimpse of a more secure and sustainable food supply.

The report also suggests that we may turn to the wild urban environment to meet growing food demands, with citizens foraging within the city for fruits, edible greenery and even insects. This could also lead to parkland being used for urban farming activities for example.

Spray on lighting and glow in the dark trees

In a bid to reduce the carbon footprint of cities, Arup’s report states that lighting used within cities will become highly sustainable and integrated into nature. Innovations such as sprayable light absorbent particles can be applied in public spaces including roads, buildings and pathways, bringing additional light and safety to parks and alleyways. Even our trees could produce light at some point in the future, with bioluminescence being spliced into their trunks and branches, significantly lowering the environmental impact of street lighting.

Tom Armour, Landscape Architecture Group Leader at Arup said: By 2050, it is predicted that the human population will have reached nine billion with 75% of people living in cities. Adaptations to existing city spaces, enabled by rapid technological innovation, will serve as major catalysts in the shift toward increasing sustainability, resilience and adaptability in dense urban environments.”

Meet Swedish fuel cell developer PowerCell at Hannover Messe April 7 - 11

Press invitation

Meet Swedish fuel cell developer PowerCell at Hannover Messe April 7 – 11

Nordic fuel cell technology leader PowerCell will be present at Europe’s largest hydrogen, fuel cells and battery exhibition in Hannover April 7 – 11, 2014. PowerCell will be showcasing the reliable, quiet and environmentally friendly PowerPac and their fuel cell stacks, the S1 and S2.

PowerPac

Power Cell’s PowerPac takes power generation to a new level. By using worldwide available road diesel, electric power generation is now cleaner and more efficient than ever before. PowerCell’s fuel cell system converts road diesel to electricity in an energy efficient and environmentally friendly manner, with minimal or no emissions and silent operations. The unit produces about 3kW of electric power.

PowerPac is a complete electric power-generating unit using ordinary low sulphur road diesel. The 3kW PowerPac can be optimized for many applications and markets, and deliver clean power using existing fuel.

Not only is this technology more efficient than conventional products, it is also much cleaner. The PowerPac produces no toxic emissions due to the controlled catalytic process in the reformer. The conversion is also highly efficient making fuel cost low compared to traditional solutions. Since no combustion takes place the noise level is kept to a minimum.

Diesel fuel was the first choice for fuelling the system, as it for many years on will be the dominating fuel in the transport sector. Its high energy content makes it suitable also for remote off grid installations such as remote telecom towers. As diesel today in many countries is partly renewable it will be an attractive energy source and bridge the gap to the zero emission society.

Fuel cell stacks – S1 and S2

The Fuel Cell stack is based on PEM technology (Polymere electrolyte membrane). This is the most commonly used technology today, owing to its reliable and dynamic characteristics that allows for full power output within seconds. Another feature is the capability for extensive starts and stops. It uses metal bipolar plates and state of the art MEA to give a robust, low cost and high performance design. Some of the design features are patented.

The S1 fuel cell stack can be offered in 1-5 kW electric output, either with reformate capability or using pure hydrogen. Cell Voltage Monitoring (CVM) can be provided if the customers do not have its own solution.

PowerCell recently announced that they are in the final stage of development of its second fuel cell stack platform, the S2. The S2 platform is a complement the first generation fuel cell stack, the S1, as it covers a larger power range up to 25 kW, still with the same tolerance towards CO and reformate gas. The S2 uses proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology and is the choice for automotive applications.
